8 Ways Trump Has Bungled his Coronavirus Response
He finally declared it a national emergency after just a couple of weeks ago standing in front of a huge campaign rally & falsely saying it was a hoax by the Democrats. It obviously wasn't. Rush Limbaugh, a buddy of Trump's had spread the conspiracy theory in the days b4 the rally. The fake news spread like a virus itself. It's had HUGE consequences. Basically all the stock market gain just vaporized. Money that could have instead been spent investing in ppl!!
I know we're not allowed to post whole articles so I'll summarize some of the other points.
3. Trump is seemingly hoping for a magic bullet. He keeps saying there will be a vaccine "soon." That's not possible. Also this is the dude who spent yrs peddling dumb, totally disproven anti-vaxxer myths about vaccines so he's eroded confidence in vaccination b4 this one is even out.
4. Some of the administration’s rhetoric is just plain racist.
5. The administration reportedly almost removed informational posters from immigration courts.
The detention centers where ppl have been placed are dehumanizing & in horrific condition. The Trump administration argued that basic necessities of hygiene weren't needed. In these crowded places a virus could spread like wildfire. But info put up on how ppl can try to protect themselves was taken down.
6. He’s not cancelling campaign events.
Tons of other events have been canceled or postponed - Coachella, NBA. Colleges have canceled social events - if they even still have kids on campus bc a lot have evacuated.
7. He’s considering bailing out fossil fuel companies losing money.
The stock market has plummeted. There's millions of Americans who do not have paid sick leave & don't know what they'll do if they get sick but risk losing their jobs if they don't show up to work. There's millions who don't have health insurance or it's just pitifully inadequate.
There's going to be a recession. Yet he's focused on bailing out Big Oil. When a lot of the instability there is caused by how he's messed up in the ME.
8. He put MIKE PENCE in charge. Pence who wrote an oped ridiculing public health officials for saying that smoking is bad & underplaying its link to lung cancer. Who helped fuel an awful HIV epidemic in his state when he was the governor.
On a positive note. Now that Trump & his own kids have been exposed to two people who have confirmed cases of COVID-19 he no longer thinks it's a hoax & declared a national emergency. Matt Gaetz who wore a gas mask to mock the coronavirus bill then had to self-quarantine bc of being exposed to it & having his constituents die of it finally seems to realize it's not a joke either. So.......progress.

1. Trump's public statements aren’t inspiring confidence.
During a recent visit to the CDC, the president said a lot of bizarre things, including that he didn’t know the flu could be deadly. (The CDC estimates that between 12,000 and 61,000 people have died from the flu annually since 2010).
Last week, while signing an emergency funding bill for coronavirus response, Trump said people should stay calm because the virus will “go away.”
He also shared an unfounded belief that travel restrictions or cancellations mean people will remain in the U.S. and spend money here, which will be good for the economy. The president has even wondered aloud whether it’s best to leave passengers stranded on a cruise ship in order to keep U.S. coronavirus statistics low.
2. He’s been dishonest about how to get tested.
Additionally, Trump misrepresented the availability of tests. "They have the tests. And the tests are beautiful. Anybody that needs a test gets a test,” he said. This isn’t true, of course. Following the statement, health and human services secretary, Alex M. Azar II, reiterated that testing must be approved by a doctor or medical professional.
Politico reported yesterday that there seems to be an “inability to prepare samples for testing, creating uncertainties in how long it will take to get results.”

4. Some of the administration’s rhetoric is just plain racist.
The president and members of his administration (including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo) have shared messages that refer to COVID19 as the “Wuhan virus” or “China virus,” both of which critics say are as racist and xenophobic as using images of Chinese people to talk about the virus in media. Even the head of the CDC has said it’s wrong to call it the “Chinese coronavirus.”
