When the defense opens by alleging that the events that prompted those payments never happened, then establishing that there was reason for Trump (or his proxies) to pay off Stormy Daniels is relevant.

I would guess the same reason he allowed Stormy Daniels to be a witness. To smear. Paying to kill a story, is common anyway in politics. We call it campaigning. They just want a conviction, before the election. By the time it is overturned the election will be over.

The relationship has no bearing on the case. If he cooked the books it didn’t make any difference if he had an affair or not. He didn’t want the story getting out whether it was true or not.

It does have to do with the motivation regarding the charges, which is why she was called. Trumps defense was that he didn't pay Daniels to suppress the information for his campaign but to keep it from his wife, while Daniels in her testimony showed that Trump wasn't worried about his wife at all.

Part of her testimony was that when the topic of Melania came up between Trump and Stormy, he expressed no worry about her finding out.
