Trump tweeted that "someone can write an article or book, totally make up stories and form a picture of a person that is literally the exact opposite of the fact, and get away with it without retribution or cost."

This is not accurate. Anyone who alleges defamation from a fabricated and inaccurate account could sue under at least one and possibly two legal doctrines, and if they did, they would have a good chance of prevailing at trial — even a public figure like Trump, who would have to meet a higher legal standard.

We rate the statement False

It is accurate. Inaccuracy is only one element of defamation. The plaintiff also has to show damages. For a public figure such as Trump, there is also a third element, malicious intent; the plaintiff must show that defendant either knew the claims were false or showed reckless disregard as to their truth.

The self-proclaimed fact checkers at Politifact are not as smart as they think they are...

This is petty.. the obssesive nit-picking of Trump is making his critics look small-picture and patronizing.
To me, fair questions should be, how is the economy, national security, etc.. but all this is more about personal hatred of Trump. Critics who hang on every Trump utterance are looking like bitter Lilliputians.

Batting a thousand there, tulc. Wrong again.

One CAN indeed do this, because the defenses are opinion, truth, privilege, fair comment on matter of public interest, and no damages, among others. All you have to do is word it all as opinion, and many have done this to get back at people for whom they are seething in hatred. (Thinking of a few Hollywood tell-all's here).

A public figure also has to prove actual malice, which is a hard standard to meet as you have to prove actual knowledge of the person making the statement.
