I lived in Oxford, Mississippi in 2014-2016 and this was commonplace.
Looks like that mystery is solved.
My roommate had southern flag in the living room and he was good friends with my other roommate who was black.
The technical term is "Traitor's Rag".

The "stars and bars" became more of a southern country boy thing in the 20th century.
Strictly speaking, "Stars and Bars" was the nickname given to what was the first national flag of the Confederacy.

What is often called the "Stars and Bars" today is a modification of a Confederate battle flag designed by Gen. P. G.T. Beauregard, which has since become a Southern "pride" flag. It was never a Confederate national flag.

Good, then folks shouldn't get apoplectic over this flag:

They get "apoplectic" over it because it was never the national emblem of the Confederacy. It's billed as a "Southern pride" flag but frequently displayed as "white pride" flag.

a. the desire to maintain human slavery

Thats not what they say.
b. the desire to disintegrate the nation.

Here is an interesting parallel. From Putin's point of view, Ukraine's separation is also disintegration of a nation. And Putin accuses Ukraine of the same things that northerners accuse southerners of: racism. So why is it, in case of Ukraine, you support its separation, but in case of southern states you oppose it?

Wow, my time was in the 70s right after all the prejudice. Maybe social engineering doesn't affect friends.

Which kind of social engineering are you referring to? There are many different ones, so its not clear unless you spell it out.

I'm from a small town in Nebraska, population roughly ~1000. I remember when I was a freshman in high school, roughly the spring of 2011, there were teen boys who had a confederate flag on their truck they drove to school. The School and now was and is predominately White.

Some people love to cause drama.

I agree with this one, but probably for different reasons. I've always thought there really shouldn't be any flags other than the official flags of the country, state and\or agency flown on government buildings.

And Im sure many who display confederate flags arent interested in racism at all. But then for goodness sakes choose a different symbol beside ones that emerged from the desire to maintain human slavery.

I dont value Putins pov on this. Nor should I. He's a flat out tyrant bent on putting others under his tyranny.

I personally don't care about banning flags. Since I don't worship them. It will be amusing to see how many people, get denied their rights. On both sides.

What do you mean by worshipping them? Showing respect for the flag which represents a country isn’t “worshipping” them.

That almost sounds Jehovah Witness.

I do understand what you are saying, though.

A guy carrying a flag is not the same as the government flying it.
Indeed. One gets a pardon, the other gets an executive order ban.

Also then must exclude the Appeal to Heaven flag so popular among the Trump fanatics.

And he did based on that quote:

This means that only three flags that are not the stars and stripes of the United States’ national flag are permitted to be flown. These are: the Prisoner of War, the Missing in Action, and the Hostage of Wrongful Detainee flags

Were the various confederate flags allowed to be flown on fed building when he took office?

Or is this really no change at all in this regard?
Soldiers were allowed to post the confederate flag in their rooms.

A soldier in uniform or a federal worker on a government facility carrying any flag other than the three permitted is also under the executive order ban.

I'm okay with that.
