I recall "Commander" (dog's name) has been removed temporarily in the past and a trainer was working with him.
On March 8, 2021, Major and Champ (Biden's other German Shepherd) were temporarily moved to live with a family friend in Delaware after a minor incident in which Major nipped a security guard.
...
They returned to the White House on March 24 after Major received some training,[15] including training on how to live with a future cat that the Bidens adopted in the White House.
...
In December 2021, on the day the Bidens announced a new puppy, Commander, was to move into the White House, it was also announced that Major would no longer be a resident there after experts recommended that it would be safer for him to live in a quieter environment with family friends.

Is Champ still at the White House? It seems to me, that if you're going to have a pet around a lot of people it should be a very social breed, not one bred to be a guard dog or a little dog that's afraid of its shadow.

Might not be the dogs fault, with the drugs being left around the White House under this administration, the dog could have ingested some.
Yeah. Nothing more dangerous than a German Shepherd high on coke.

Thanks for the clarification. I was confusing Commander with Champ.
German Shepherds can be very social (I own a 2 year old female that only gets aggresive with stray coyotes : ).
But maybe it's time for Joe to move on. The White House is a challenging environment for guard dogs....

I had a German Shepherd trained to bite on command. She never bit my son who was in elementary school, my wife or anyone she wasn’t supposed to. I did demos at schools and dozens of kids petted her and never had an incident. I wouldn’t blame this on the breed.

Some dogs just turn out to be hopelessly aggressive by nature, just as some others turn out to be hopelessly timid. The breed is significant in that a vicious big dog is more of a danger than a vicious small dog.

I trained dogs to work in law enforcement. I got bit one time and it was my fault. All the dogs were aggressive but they were also disciplined

Most dog problems start with the undiciplined owner.

Ever have any washouts that were untrainable?
I had some that were not aggressive enough. They could still be trained in obedience and make great pets. Malinous generally didn’t want to “out” in other words to let go of the sleeve but they still worked well, very high drive dogs. I never had a dog that was too aggressive.

I had two while growing up. Lucky died when I was 10 and then we got Prince. Both of them were retired police dogs. Neither of them was overly aggressive but they were both protective. Well disciplined, fortunately.

I was 7 when I trained Lucky to jump up and sit down on the roof of his dog house, that couldn't have been a comfortable place for him to sit. He'd do anything I asked him to once he understood what I wanted. But when an escapee from the mental institution several miles away jumped out of the woods and grabbed my mom, Lucky wasn't having any of that!

Who cares. That is not Biden's fault and I think there is a lot wrong with Biden. I bet Biden didn't even pick his own dog. It was likely just given to him and he just shrugged and went, "You're the boss."
Is he the owner of the dog?

Is the dog owner the responsible party for if the dog bites someone?

In most cases, after the 2nd or 3rd incident, that's when the choice is given... you either turn your dog over to someone who can handle it better, or euthanizing is on the table. (and in some states, it's not even a choice...a judge will order the latter)

I will say that if Biden cannot even manage his dog, he should not be managing the well-being of the whole country.

I think they should go in another direction and give the president a pet wild wolf. The president deserves a better pet than a mere vicious german sheppard.
What's odd is that while German Shepherds can be trained to be "attack dogs", they're very trainable in other ways.
(they're not like Pit Bulls...which why anyone owns those things as pets is beyond me)

Some interesting stats:

For recent years:
Pit Bull attacks: 3,397
German Shepherd Attacks: 113

So they're normally not hugely dangerous dogs compared to some others.

However, the interesting way to put this in perspective. Biden's dog (with 11 bite attacks), literally is responsible for 10% of all German Shepherd bite attacks over the past few years.

I think the most likely case is that the Biden home just isn't a good fit for a GSD. Based on some things I'm reading (and I'm not a pet owner, so this is just what I'm reading...I could be reading a biased source). A good home for a GSD is one where they can get outside for a lot of exercise, be stimulated with tasks, and where members of the family unit are around a lot, and they're not exactly the most recommended dog for elderly people.

Life in white house with an elderly president (who's on the road a lot) and probably not getting the dog out for recommended bonding & exercise to release some pent up energy likely isn't a great fit for a GSD.

This dog seems more his speed

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, a GSD isn't a good fit for an elderly couple that's on the road a lot.

They're saying the dog was a gift from a family member, why a high-energy breed that needs a lot of stimulation and 2 hours of daily exercise and strong family bond was the first choice for an 80 year old couple that lives in a highly controlled environment and are on the road most of the time seems like particularly poor planning.

As I noted earlier, I'm not a pet person...and that's a good thing. I acknowledge that different dog breeds have different needs...which is why I know I don't want to have one.

Far too many people get a particular breed of dog because "it looks cool" without realizing that life with one dog breed (if you want to do it right) is very different than life with a different breed.

I know people who've gotten a Husky because "their eyes look cool" without any regard for the idiosyncrasies of the breed itself.
