  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't think that Christ is being taken out of Christmas. Christians, who celebrate the season for religious purposes, can choose for themselves the level of involvement they want to have with both the secular and the religious aspects of the holiday - they can choose to make it all about church and Jesus, or they can choose to have it be a winter shopping spree, and for the most part, I think Christians are only aiding the secularization by joining in with the materialistic, Santa Claus side of things. Nothing is being taken out of Christmas; people are just choosing not to bother with the religious side in favour of presents and parties.

Yes, to a degree, I am disappointed that a lot of professing Christians are letting that side of it slide and not setting aside time for worship and religious celebration. To me, that does not inspire others to want to pursue their faith or show reverance for the holiday. It annoys me when I see Christians going berserk in their frenzy to decorate or buy gifts, or when I see them taking the kids to see Santa instead of to church, because they are usually the same ones complaining that the rest of society isn't showing reverance for the holiday, or complaining that they are being persecuted. Also, I remember Christmas as a child, where the focus was religion, and I feel bad for kids who aren't taught anything deeper then presents.

As far as secular acknowledgement, I don't think Christians can count on that and I don't think they should expect it either. I think it's fine that public schools refer to it as winter break and that government buildings stick to generic titles like "happy Holidays" when decorating or speaking about the season. While it's nice that Christians get so much coverage of their holiday, I think they expect too much sometimes. We don't decorate the local shopping malls come Ramadan, or post crescents on government buildings, or give kids breaks from school for solstice or equinox. All in all, I think Christmas gets more then fair coverage, and certainly Christians are welcome to refer to it as they please and celebrate however they desire.

In Italy Last week, a public elementary school in the northern city of Treviso decided that Little Red Riding Hood would be this year's Christmas play instead of the Christmas story.

Really? That strikes me as odd...what does Little Red Riding Hood have to do with Christmas, vacation, holidays, or the like? It seems they would at least do some pretty seasonal piece, like a play based on the "Nutcracker" or something like the "Story of the First Candy Cane", that provides a Christmas legend without going all into the story of Christ.

Well, it was be fallacious to make an appeal to tradition. Besides, IIRC, the phrase "Happy Holidays" has been used in the United States for a very long time.

Traditions are not always nice. Sometimes traditions are downright evil.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest that we have moved from "Merry Christmas" to "Happy Holidays." It's silly to pretend that Christians are the only ones who have a winter holiday, and even sillier to pretend that only Christmas is important.

I just hate how I can't even say merry Christmas to a friend without worrying about offending someone. I do not celebrate Hanukkah, so does it make sense for me to say happy Hanukkah? No. I'm a Christian, and I'm going to say Merry Christmas and I don't care whether or not I'm being politically correct!

I'm not offended at all by Merry Christmas...but it doesn't make much sense to wish for someone to have a happy holiday that they don't celebrate.

As for being politically correct...I'm no politician, and I'm not always right...guess I'm not politically correct either. I celebrate Christmas with my family even though I'm not Christian.

Has this problem really occured, or are you just speculating? I have never heard of anyone being offended that their friend offered them Christmas wishes. While some retail positions and public institutions stick to generic greetings, you as an individual are under no obligation to do so. I don't care what someone says, as long as it's polite - Happy Holidays, Happy Christmas or Bon Noel all work.
