Taste in music is HUGELY personal, I think.

I too grew up listening to rock - Journey, REO Speedwagon, Meatloaf, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, and lots of others. Some of the lyrics clearly aspire to be demonic, but they didn't bother me as a teen. It was all about the beat, which I think can really engage a person on a physical level, almost.

My tastes have changed. Do I now think this is the "best music"? Not in my opinion, though there are some old favorites that I still enjoy hearing. (I do avoid the demonic-aspirations in lyrics though.) Honestly, I think the BEST music, quality-wise, is often in the classical area. The music I tend to enjoy most is really good, inspiring (to me) "deep worship" music. The kind you can get lost in that seems to make you feel you could be carried up to heaven on it. There is precious little music like that, and I only experience it fully during corporate worship with a lot of others who are really worshipping. But there are quite a few songs that more or less give me some of that when I listen.

Sadly, what I hear on Christian radio - we have KLOVE and one Southern gospel station, isn't really like that. I do tend to enjoy a few songs here and there by Chris Tomlin, Mercy Me, Hillsongs, Vineyard's old music, a few remade hymns.

I like almost all styles of music. I really enjoy Zydeco, harp and flute instrumentals, Celtic music, classical, worship, soft rock, some country. I don't enjoy rap (except maybe the old Rapper's Delight) or most opera. Really hard metal or acid rock sets me on edge and gives me a headache now.

I really think it's so subjective. But I tend to notice how music makes me FEEL both physically and emotionally, because the effect for me can be profound.

Worship is my favorite part of church, when it's good. THAT is what feeds my spirit.
