I think survivalism is a different form. I am just wondering to what extent science can destroy the world. If Russia and the United states wanted material distrusting just how much are they able to destroy each other? From what I understand the further we are from a big city the safer we will be.

The first part makes no sense so I'll focus on the latter.

IF the US and Russia, and by extension their allies, decided to use strategic nuclear weapons against the other, distance from major cities would be a worthless factor since the amount of radiation thrown up from all the concentrated strikes on targets would be more than lethal enough to cause extra death and destruction outside of the initial explosion. That's the true lethality of nuclear weapons.

There's a website called Nukemap, which let you choose a 'target' location and projects the effects of a known warhead strike onto the 'target' giving you a visualization of the immediate effects of the strike. But with nukes, the immediate effects are never the main worry. It's always the radiation kicked out afterwards that is the main worry, and that stuff will always be carried by wind and water further than the initial blast.

We can and are having a dramatic impact on our environment and could easily reduce human society back to the renaissance period.

That is where Holywood kicks in. There is nothing better than a day after movie. What would life be like after WW3? Of course the Mormons, they think everyone will be running around trying to steal each others food. People think they need to be armed to the max so they can defend their stash of food.

Of course the left behind people want to talk about how the antichrist will take over control of the world. So they can produce a lot of movies about that also.

Man's use of science can destroy us or help us.

Yes I sold knives out in Amish county where they give knives to 12 year or even 8 year old boys. I have seen a father buy a knife and pick up a rock and dull the blade and give it to his son. So I would teach them how to use a tool in a safe way and I would teach them a knife in the hands of a doctor can promote healing. In the hands of butcher it can be used to prepare your dinner. But you can also use a knife for evil to harm others.

Like the knife, science can be used for good or evil. My son says the same for drugs. You can use them for good and for healing or to destroy people. Their is use and their is abuse.

The question is not really about Science.

'Science' isn't going to launch any nuclear weapons.

The question is more "Is there technology available capable of killing everybody on earth?"

Depending how extreme or insane a scenario you imagine, I think the answer is basically yes.

We could all stab each other with pointed sticks until the last few commit suicide.

A nuclear 'war' designed specifically to kill everyone would almost certainly succeed.
