  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

when atheists ask you, "where did god come from?" i have lost count of how many times i have had to say, "God has always been." then they say "that doesn't make any sense." how do you deal with it? I know it shouldn't matter, but i want something to say when the question my religion

Anytime you hear them say that, say to yourself: thank you God that I have ability to believe.

Lots of people can't. It's not that they don't want to, they just don't believe. How can you make yourself belive, if you don't? So count your blessings, praise God, and be gentle with poor souls who can't see, whose eyes are closed and who strugle with believing.

I know one Christian who loves God, but still have a problem believing on some days. It's very hard for him.

Because creation is full of beginnings and endings they find it difficult to understand that their viewpoint is subjective and limited.

It is like you are a character in a book talking to another character in a book trying to explain to them about the writer of the book. It makes no sense to them because everything they know is in the book.

Also, their very being "makes no sense" and that is always before them, but they never think of that. Did they call themselves into being?

It is like a foreign country that is very different then your own: you can try and describe it, but they have never been there so it does not make sense.

Or someone who was raised on a ranch can have a hard time coming to a city, as they do not know about city things and keep expecting everything to happen like it does on a ranch. But, it does not.

Anyway, what do they think came before their idea of the beginning of the universe? Nothing? So nothing, how did it get created?

Or how does something come from nothing?

When they say: "that doesn't make any sense."

You could say, how can it? You being finite will always have a beginning and an end. How could you possibly comprehend the infinite? It's like trying to explain all of the mysteries the vast oceans hold by taking an 8 ounce glass of sea water from the ocean and scrutinize it throughly.. No matter how complete your examination is of the contents in that glass, there are oceans or libraries of content that, that 8 ounce glass just won't be able to contain.. In the grand scope of things our minds are akin to that 8 ounce glass, The infinite God could be compared to the ocean if the ocean was not limited to this planet, solar system, galaxy, universe...

One suggestion is to answer the question with a question. Question them as to what they think, what they believe, why they believe it. It's good that they're questioning "where did God come from?". That perhaps indicates they are seeking, then again it could be because they are trying to test your own understanding, to mock Christianity or to weaken your faith. Remember these people are currently serving satan and doing his bidding, but there is hope you are planting a seed or perhaps nourrishing or even leading them to be harvested by the Holy Spirit.

Just remain firm in your Faith, keep studying the Word and learn scripture that you can share with others. A simple prayer to the Lord before answering can do wonders.
