Ah, a single anecdotal story in support of a general "fact". How do you know your story isn't an exception? I wouldn't be surprised if this was a highly variable phenomenon, and many GPs would in fact advise you to eat more of X instead of automatically prescribing a supplement.I was recently written a prescription for Potassium and didn't get it filled, choosing to eat bananas instead.
There's also the counterexample of mood and anxiety disorders, where cognitive behavioural therapy (in essence, positive thinking) is a widely used and even preferred alternative to drugs. Sometimes it works better than drugs. Sometimes it doesn't work.
We could also debate whether the prescription habits of your average GP have any relevance to science.
