What guitarists do you like?

Oh Golly, I used to be into guitarists like Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, Slash, etc., but now I really don't care too much about the guitar in a song. I guess my three favorite now are Isaac Brock, Jerry Cantrell, and Billy Corgan. Tom Morello is great with effects, but that's not really my preference (although RATM had some pretty cool riffs). Santana just seems like the same stuff over and over.

I don't know, Alice in Chains was before Nirvana as well, and perhaps had the best vocal parts (not that this really matters). Cantrell and Staley's intertwined harmonies were certainly more complex, and in my opinion, prettier than Cobain's. Nevermind is why Nirvana grew to cult status. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was easier to embrace by the mainstream than a song like "Man in the Box" by Chains or "Outshined" by Soundgarden. Honestly, how many people own Incesticide?

You have a great point, but I own incesticide, but only because it was given to me.

I disagree, I think they are worthy of their rating. They captured the imagination of the music buying public in ways other "grunge" bands didn't, mainly through enigmatic lyrics and simple, more commercial sounding songs than their peers.

i don't really know whether or not i think they're overrated. If you listen to their unplugged cd, it's obvious that their songs aren't just good with screaming and distortion... they have really good melodies. But if you also listen to their live fom the muddy banks of the wishka cd, they're so recklessly grudgy, it's awesome.

i think they really define grunge. Alice in chains, pearl jam, soundgarden, i believe, are maybe musically better... musically more interesting bands... but they kind of build on grunge. Nirvana is just straight up grunge.

Is bob marley overrated? No, he was the epitome of reggae. If you like, reggae, you like Marley. There are other good reggae artists, but Marley will always stand out. Is Nirvana overrated? i don't think so, because they define grunge. If you like grunge music, the only reason you wouldn't like Nirvana is because they're popular.

Personally, I'm tired of hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit. I don't look up to cobain as an amazing guitarist. I don't think the guys in nirvana were geniuses. But they set a good foundation. I guess it's a question of how high they are rated. Sure, everyone loves nirvana. But just because everyone loves them doesn't mean they suck, or they are overrated. Everone loves nirvana, but i don't think everyone who loves nirvana feels that nirvana is the GREATEST band.

You may all disagree with me, but whatev.

How so? And Alice in Chains was before Nirvana. Just a little bit, same year '87.

You can't generalize like that. I like grunge but I don't like Nirvana because I there music doesn't appeal to me.

Nirvana is a good band, but the whole mentality from their "fans" (if they really are such, since all they seem to care about is Teen Spirit) almost ruins it. I'm so sick of people having [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] when Smells Like Teen Spirit comes on the radio. That song, while pretty good, is not remotely near their best. I'm so sick of people my age, who were too young during the Grunge Movement to pretend like they get the Grunge Movement just by listening to Teen Spirit, worshiping that bad. That song is definitely overrated, and I think Nevermind is very much overrated as well. Don't get me wrong-- it's an good album, but it's usually ranked up there as like 4 or 5, with legends like Revolver and The White Album, and above some like Dark Side, Blonde On Blonde, etc. I'm sorry, but that's just wrong.

"The Times" shouldn't be behind why an album is great. It should be the music. And the music is great, but the fans go overboard and ruin it.

They played several covers during their unplugged set, plus they had several backup musicians playing as well.

I'll disagree here. I'd say that Pearl Jam embodies what the world views as grunge. I also respect Pearl Jam because they do what they want. They probably "sold out" the least of all the Seattle bands. They decided after "Jeremy" that they didn't like doing music videos, so they stopped doing them. They also fought with Ticketmaster tooth and nail over ticket prices. Nirvana is "punkish grunge" and AIC is "metal grunge" in my opinion.

Idk about this. Bob Marley clearly stands out as the best artist during that time period and probably for reggae in general. Grunge was an entire movement coming from Seattle...they were sick of songs like "Girls, girls, girls" and all the glam that was embraced by the popular bands of the late 80s.

The whole Nirvana argument seems to be ongoing on CF. A while back, Jordan said that he thought that Nirvana was almost underrated because of the backlash that they have received. I'm starting to see his point, as this thread illustrates the point. Because alot of my friends think that Nirvana is great and don't have a clue, I have always been turned off a bit by them. I don't think it was Cobain's aim to be the most popular musician of the 90s, but they weren't a bad band...just not one of the greatest of all time, and probably not the best of that movement. One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from Kurt: "I'd rather be dead than cool." I guess now he is both.

This is true. I don't know how much it really matters, b/c it often takes a band a while to find their sound, but I'm pretty sure that "Man in the Box" was a huge grunge radio hit before Nirvana had one. This means something to me.

Teen Spirit isn't even that great of a song. They have many that are much better. My personal favorite is "Heart Shaped Box". I think my main problem with Nirvana is that Kurt is credited for all of their success. Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl were just as big of a part of Nirvana as Cobain was, IMO. The bass line in "Lithium" is one of my all time favorites, and Grohl would always add his distinctive fast-paced snare fills. Cobain wrote great lyrics at certain times, but he was very inconsistent. Some of his lyrics are plain terrible. Besides that, I don't think Cobain ever wrote a song lyrically that can compare with "Black" by Pearl Jam, "No Excuses" by Alice in Chains, "Outshined" by Soundgarden, or a plethora of songs by the Smashing Pumpkins.

to me, the only thing more annoying than an overrated band, is when people complain that they're overrated. so often, IMO, nirvana is getting attacked for being overrated, that they become underrated. I'm not trying to preach the nirvana gospel, i'm just saying, they were a solid band. I think when we compare one band to the other, both bands get robbed of credit. Nirvana was good. Soundgarden was good. Alice in Chains was good. Bush was good. Smashing Pumpkins was good.

I think they were good in their time, but they have grown way over play and over rated

good in their time? Nirvana ceased to be when Kurt Cobain killed himself . In 1994. When you were 4. What do you mean? Good in their time?
