  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anyone actually read bible quotes in posts?

When one of the usual suspects makes a post with a long bible quote in it does anyone actually read it, or like me do you skip right past it? Just wondering...
depends. I generally don't read ANY post, biblical or not, that is longer than 1/2 a page of typed text on a word doc. It's too much and I'm here for entertainment, not to read expanses of junk (which normally things that long are)

considering 90% of the quotes are the same ones over and over again or have nothing to do with the debate, normally i ignore them now

the only time i really care about the bible quotes is when people post them out of context, namely the nonsense claiming that homosexuality is what paul is talking about in romans, they like to leave out the first verse of the chapter to distort paul's writing. when its really about idolatry

Very rarely do I read them. Only when there is only one or two quotes and their inclusion is explained in the poster's own words. But when I am hit by a barrage of unexplained Bible quotes, I skip over them without reading them every time.

I read them if they are actually needed or part of the context. For instance if a thread is discussing numbers 3-5, I would read all 3 chapters to make sure I am not missing anything.

If however someone, (and you learn to know who does and does not) posts a few bible verses that do not seem to have anything to do with the discussion at hand, I don't bother.

I only read them if they are short quotes or if the post is replying to something I said. Perhaps the "ususal suspects" know we wont read them anyways and thats why if you actually take the time to read them they never really have anything to do with the conversation :p

Yup.

Which is why I do read the quotes when an educated Christian replies to one of the usual suspects.

ya I will read bible quotes from people that I know dont just throw random quotes into everything they post, normally these people use them in opposition to the "usual suspects". Lol the "usual suspects" do amuse me sometimes though "heres my opinion, I know nobody will agree so I'll throw random bible quotes in and bold or caps words that have to do with the conversation eventhough the actual quote doesnt have anything to do with it, maybe that'll convince them"

When the post is entirely a wall of text without any reason I skip it. When it's in response to another post I glance to see where it's headed, when it's an invitation to discuss what the scripture means I might read it.

When it comes to certain people posting scripture I usually ignore it completely.

This is my sentiment exactly. If a verse is used appropriately, and adds to what you are saying, I think it's good.

However, there are posters that post a whole chapter, and then make some bizarre conclusion from it. If I were to post a paragraph about how Lot, after leaving Sodom and Gomorrah, got drunk and had incest with his daughters so that they could give him a male heir, and then show how that proves that incest and drunkeness is ok with God, you would have to really wonder if I have ever read the bible at all.

I have found that often, when someone posts one verse (often out of context), that I will actually go and see the verse in context, and find that the poster doesn't know what they are talking about.

One of the things I saw repeatedly was an angry woman on another site who would quote, "Let you love be without hypocracy; cling to what is good, abhor what is evil," and tell me that she abhors me, because I am evil. However, 12:9 to the end of the chapter is about how to act in love and harmony, and how to love your neighbor.

They would often say that hating a sinner was the most loving thing that a Christian could do, because it would lead them away from sin, as well as mocking people, insulting them, threatening them, etc.

With those kind of Christians, Satan can go on holiday.

It entirely depends on the context of the thread. If the thread is debating biblical tenets, then of course I am going to read (and analyze) any quotes involved. On the other hand, if the thread is about generic ethical and moral principles with no overt nod to a biblical interpretation or opinion, I often consider biblical quotes to be irrelevant (or at least, not relevant to half the audience and therefore of little use in the general debate).

For example, if the thread topic is the biblical (or godly) perspective on abortion, then I certainly would (and would expect anyone else to) pay particular attention to any biblical quotes. On the other hand, if the thread topic is the constitutional perspective on abortion, I would ignore any biblical quotes since the constitution has nothing to do with and is not at all influenced by the bible.
