Does a phone Line extension effect DSL speed?

Hi

We currently have a 20 metre phone line running from the phone socket to the ADSL modem. Will this cause line attenuation? Some people are saying it will degrade quality, I haven't noticed any weird speeds, but not for certain.

I think it actually does effect the quality but sounds like you have a pretty good connection if not noticing anything. One way you could test it to find out for sure is to do a speed test both long distance and short distance.

If it's a problem, your carrier can likely strengthen the signal for you; my phone company did that for me due to a poor line.

As long as you're not experiencing random drops, packet loss, or bad slowdowns, you should be fine.

A greater issue is the higher potential for interference from other electrical fields that would affect the unshielded phone cable.

It will depend a lot on the quality of the extension cable. Some are made with very low quality wire, and will produce attenuation and potential connection problems. However many are made of wire that is the same grade as that used for internal house wiring, so the cord would be the same has having a new phone socket installed.

If there aren't any noticable problems, then I wouldn't worry too much.
