  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does a baseball curve?

Yes.

Curveball Aerodynamics

High pressure is produced on the side of the ball spinning towards the batter. Low pressure is produce on the side spinning away from the batter. The difference in pressure produces aerodynamic lift and changes the flight of the ball compared to the same pitch in a vacuum.

As an experiment, it is really easy to reproduce the effect using a party balloon. Hit the balloon in such a way that it imparts spin and velocity, and notice that you can control the direction that the balloon curves by controlling the spin.

Goofing around in school way back when, I was surprised to find that by sort of underhand rolling a pencil off your fingers as you throw it across the room, it would get enough spin to curve quite dramatically.

Indeed. Golf is another sport where you can produce quite dramatic curvature on a shot depending on the direction of spin.

Wiffle Balls were my favorite as a kid. :) You could make those suckers do wild stuff with the right flick of the wrist.

Aerodynamics is quite fascinating

I never got the hang of it in my engineering classes, but my son did a science experiment on this several years back in middle school. What he came up with was very impressive ... but since he's my son I might be a bit biased.

No, a baseball doesn't DO anything. It is merely the passive recipient of forces thst act on it. :p

Nope.

A pitched ball with the right spin, does indeed move and that has been proven with studies. To the batter and pitcher, the balls is perceived to have moved more than it did, but it most definitely moves.

If you have ever golfed and sliced a ball off the tee that curves right, it is the same principle.

That does sound like it describes the knuckleball though. (RIP.)
