• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

hello,

I have been debating whether or not to go see someone about my SI. It has become a bit out of control as of recently, and tonight was definately the worst.:(

I would use the university's free service, and this is the main reason I have not been able to decide. It is a very small university, where mostly everyone knows everyone :groupray:

But I have been reading some posts which talk about this, and realise it would be confidential, but I'm still unsure. I am extremely shy as well:cry:

I guess I am asking what you guys would do

Hey,
Well first of all, I'm really sorry that you cut. I know how hard it is to stop and fight the urges. I really think that you should see someone about this, i think it would really help you to talk to someone. I know it helps me. Like especially last year, I had a counsellor is school that i went to and i talked to her very often. she was always there for me when i needed her and i felt so much better going to school. everything is confidential, unless you are under a certain age, then they have to tell youre parents. but i dont think thats ur case since ur in a university. i hope that youre feeling better soon. you can pm me anytime.

I would definitely consider going to someone. Sometimes just talking about it can really help loosen SI's grip on you. It can be a very liberating feeling to not be alone with your secret anymore.

Believe me, when they say confidential, they really mean it. There are all kinds of laws to protect health information, including who's been to a clinic, why, etc. I too got help at a very small university's health clinic and it was a great experience for me. Totally professional and confidential - they wouldn't even leave a message on the answering machine in case my roomate listened to the messages!!

Good luck! I'll be praying for you.

Definately yes. You should go. Talking about self harm is the first step towards quitting. It is also very healing. Remember you don't have to share anything until you are ready and comfortable. You have to find the right person. You can go and side step the issue for a while until you are ready and feel confident with whom you are talking too. So really going is just a trial. YOu really don't have anthing to loose because you don't have to say anthing you don't want to.

HOpe this helps. I'll be praying for you. I know it is scary. The first time I talked about it I was shaking uncontrollably. But it got easier.

Hey chick!
If its free I reckon you shud go for it!
Its so important to have someone you can talk to about this and if they are a proffesional then all the better I think!
But remember-you dont have to tell them anything straight away! why not go see someone, just a couple of times and see what they're like, if you think you like and can trust them then carry on, if not you dont have to go again. but continue looking for help elsewhere!

this is my thought!

hello,

its okay. i was super quiet and stuff as well when i went to my school's psychiatrist. I didnt completely open up about my SI until the second session. i, on the first session, asked the psychiatrist questions about herself and also let her get to know me (the simple stuff..like what im studying to be and stuff). I did this more toward the end of the session because at the beginning i barely said a word..It was complete silence for a while..she would try and ask things..i'd answer then wouldnt go more in depth about it.
I would say give it a try. Open up to the person once you feel comfortable to do so...even if it takes you a few sessions. You will know when the right time is.
I hope things work out..And don't worry about not opening up right away..They wont force anything out of you if you dont tell them right away. They are very patient.
And that person wont tell anyone. They take oaths not to do that..everything is confidential. The person cant just go off and tell everyone what you say in sessions. If that person does, their certificate in psychology will be in jeopardy im sure.
Everything will be fine!
I will pray for the best for you!
