  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I remember making snowflakes out of paper but never glasswaxed it. Sounds great. I remember my Mom always wanted a star on our house. She would by wire and bend it in the shape of a star and wrape evergrenn around it and put lights on it and it ended up looking really nice. No store bought deco. for my Mom!!

I remember my Dad killing fowls for Xmas, and cooking the ham in the gas copper in the laundry.

I remember getting bits and pieces from the tip, and making trolleys to ride down a very steep hill (wonder I didn't kill myself).

I remember swimming in a flooded creek to see how fast I could go with the current (no, Mum didn't know about this).

I remember helping a farmer cut lantana with a machete, and him paying me with old timber. The timber was to build myself an aviary. But my father took it to build a garage.. the garage is still standing today.

I think it would be nice if some of us write down some of these memories for our families.

One neat memory I have is riding in my Grandfathers seigh pulled by his two horses. It wasn't a fancy sleigh like in OLd english postcards but a working sleigh used to haul stuff but we loved it anyway. It was a blast.

I went down the hill in one of those with our youngest at the front, but hit a big bump and he bumped his tooth. Ouch...fortunately it didn't break. I think we hit something under the snow.

We had a wonderful place to sled in our neighborhood called "Strawberry Hill" not sure why cause no strawberries there. Anyway, we would pull our sleds over there each good snow fall. It was really steep and wide...lots of fun.

Oh my I do remember those toboggans and not with much joy. They frightened me, I think I actually preferred the cardboard but what I really loved was tubing in the snow. I also can remember getting my first pair of ice skates when I was about 9 or10 and spending all Christmas day learning to skate all by myself on the frozen outdoor rink across from our house It was bumpy and with the lower figure skating picks still in place on the skates I spent more time on the ice than gliding over it. lol gg

Oh my gosh!!! Don't let Annie know this!!
I remember my brother slidding down the hill and ran snack into the cornor of the fireplace, had three stitches.
Where I live we have Letchworth State Park and they have made a huge hill and it is only for tubbing, fun fun fun. There's another place that has a tubbing place and now they have put in a thing that if you hook onto it it pulls you up the hill!!

Actually I was thinking of Annie when I wrote about the skating. I admire her for attempting this now. She is great. I struggle with fitness at the moment but I love watching skating. I don't have cable though so don't get great reception and only a few channels.

I have some great memories of ice skating on frozen lakes. But I didn't learn until I was over thirty..it wasn't hard since I knew how to roller skate and it is quite the same. I do remember taking our daughter to ice skaking lessons. She was only six then and said she wanted to be an ice skater when she grew up. Of course in those days she wanted to be a missionary with a little red sports car too and before that an ice cream lady.

She works for an insurance company.

I can remember a very funny and embarassing incident in my teen years. Our youth group had decided to drive 11 miles out of town to the local beach community where there was a roller skating arena. You know the tour wheels etc. It was the late 60's so I was all decked out in some very snazzy paisley purple bell bottoms. Wow they were something. Well one or two times round the track I did a great three point landing and split them totally. I had to borrow a friends sweater to wrap around myself and one of my "Boy" friends from the youth group drove me home. Even years later when I met these guys they would bring it up.

Delightful story but I can understand how embarrassing that could be! Once when I was very dressed up in a splendid dress the waist on my half slip broke and the slip fell to the floor. It seems I needed a larger size. Very embarrassing to say the least. :sigh:
