  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Ok. Do you remember when we went to school and all we(parents) had to provide was maybe a pencil, and maybe a notebook?
Well things ain't like that any more. Ever since my GK started school their parents have had to provide everything. Spending any where from $40-$50 on each child. We used to get paper ,glue(in those big gal. jars and we used to eat it once in awhile) pens, pencil(?) crayons(in those big tubs),all kinds of construction paper, books. Well now the only things our schools provide is the germs, colds, yucky food, and so so learning. I went with my daughter when she got the kids stuff this year and there was a list!! They even have to have certain kinds of notebooks, and certain kinds of backpacks. I'll take the good old days any time. Thank God I have no kids in school now. Don't know what happens to the families of kids that can't afford all of this.
Bless

I remember Thanksgiving at my Grandma's house.. My "Mom & Pop" lived right next door to us.. about 15 feet away across the sidewalk..

I've never liked shoes.. perhaps it is the "hillbilly side of me.. *smile* I would run barefoot from my house to theirs in every season.. even when there was snow on the ground..

"Mom would make turkey & all the Fixings.. and could she bake.. that is where I learned.. We'd make pies, and she would always let me have the left over pie dough to make dough-doughs.. roll out the dough.. spread it with butter.. sprinkle cinnamon & sugar on it.. roll it up and cut it into 1 inch slices.. and bake..

I always thought it was left over dough.. and one day, not too long ago, I was thinking about her.. and a light bulb when off over my head.. there was TOO much leftover dough for it to be leftover.. *smile*

She gave me a love for baking..

All my mother's brothers & sisters would come to Mom & Pop's for Thanksgiving.. Uncle Red and his family from Cincinnati.. Aunt Helen and her family from Cleveland.. Uncle Jess lived just up the road.. They'd put both expanding boards in the table and everyone would enjoy dinner & each other..

I hadn;t though about it much lately.. but I miss those times..

Glad somebody does! And, Bonnie, when you're on that forum again, watch out for Daisy - you might find her style familiar! It's my next most favourite forum after this one!

BTW, someone on there named me

so I added it to my sig!

You just reminded me of something - when I started school we had chalk and a little slate to write on - honestly! No pencils and paper.

nobody remembers Buddy then ....
Of course I remember Buddy. I am in awe that you got to see him. I barely had time to get to like him then he was killed. He was a pretty talented fellow, and pretty decent I think gg

They started making them again a few years ago.. I used to love watching them bubble..

We used to have reflectors that went behind the individual light bulbs on the tree too..

My mom also had some decorations that were made out of tinsel like material.. they were all sorts of abstract shapes.. and she always had little stuffed birds that sat on the branches..

Yes! I remember the reflectors too...I think that they were fire hazard... I can't use tinsel anymore because of my cats.. do you remember angel hair...it was a great filler for those conspicuous holes...;)

like these!!
Nice pic. Thanks. Yes, I sure do. I still have three boxes of these, but now I put them in hanging baskets and hang from hooks on the ceiling beams. And I use something else on the tree--made out of frosted plastic..deer, snowman, etc. and also some gold and silver small ones...birdcage, teddy bear, dove, etc. Even have a small wooden carving of the nativity scene to hang as well as a large nativity scene under the tree which sets up on a table.

Do you remember those tin foil icycles? And stringing pop corn?

My mom had some European ornaments which were absolutely precious. Very old and very unique.

Bless you,

pilgrimgal :) :holy:

These are some cool ornaments I have had for awhile. I tried to actually copy and paste the picture of them here but it didn't work. Here is the link. They are the carousel shaped colourful plastic ornaments. I have had mine for 36 years and if you put them over a light they twirl. Not as cool as the bubbling ones but my kids loved them when they were little.

I used to string popcorn all the time for the tree.. with cranberries too..

The tree was always a real pine.. you could put it outside for the birds to eat the popcorn after christmas..

Remember how you would look for hours & hours for the "perfect tree".. and then come home to find out the truck was bent cause it looked straight on the hillside.. *grin*

And I remember the angel hair too..

I still have two genuine glass baubles that I bought in 1968. One is a big fat clown and the other is like what happens to a table tennis ball when one side is crushed in, you get a little 'cave' in the bauble, but in it is a snow scene with a little tree and a snowman! Treasured items now! There was a third one but it just imploded a couple of years ago - age, I think. Know how it felt!
