Back in the early days, they didn't have disposable needles, and each needle had to be sharpened by the staff using them...Some lacked that skill, and would really smash the needle in. It is rather painless these days.
Cheers, Jim

Hi Jim
BY COMPARISON ! yes I agree

"no-pain = no-gain"

I have an old radio from the mid 1940's that has a pull out drawer that played 78 rpm records. My dad had quite a collection. I still have a few but they are very fragile and I am afraid us kids did in a number of them. Anyway I still have some great Jimmy Dorsey and some Mills Brothers to listen to.
I also have some of my own childhood records with great titles like "mind your mommy" "brush your teeth and say your prayers". Some of them look like regular small 45's with a small hole but play at 78 rpm. The others are actually cardboard and have bright pictures with the record part glued on top. My dad had the whole unit refinished and fixed before he died and it worked great unitl about 3 years ago when one of the tubes burned out. Jan

Yes, I do remember calling the thing where food was put the ice box, I remember the first refrigerator we got. A couple of my uncles had out houses. My oldest sister had a record player we had to wind up frequently. I remember the 78, 33 1/3, 48 records and now I have CDs. Life is much easier now. Thank you God.

I remember my first record player, how fascinated I was, and even more fascinated by the music. I would sit and listen, so delighted. It was just a small box on the floor. I learned to be careful not to scratch my records, mostly 45's. I couldn't have been older than three--this was the early 50's. We then moved to Germany, and I remember asking for a German record for my birthday. So, on my fourth birthday, I was given a record of children's songs. How I loved those songs!

Today I love opera. Go figure. I'm still listening to people singing....

My mom had a player in the living room.. The song I remember most was '3 little fishies' - And they swam & they swan, right over the dam.. lol..

I didn't get my first record player until I was around 12.. or 13.. the Beatles were just coming to the us.. and I baby sat (50 cents an hour - no matter how many kids.. one of my neighbors had 5 little ones under 8)

I bought "Meet the Beatles" & I played it.. and played it.. being very careful not to scratch it - as you were..

Then my sister who is 8 years younger than me, put this BIG long scratch all across the record.. and it skipped.. and skipped all the way through..

My mom felt so bad that she bought me another one.. *smile*

I remember when the Beatles first came out...I wasn't sure if I liked them or not, lol.

In the end, I probably listened to them just a much as anything else...then moved on.

Everything changed when I found the Lord! I couldn't get enough of Him, and so listened to Christian radio all day. I met Dr. J Vernon McGee on the "Bible Bus" and loved to hear him preach. This was the 70's, but I still listen to some of his re-broadcasts today. Such a godly man!

Vernon McGee was awesome, an odd voice but such a dynamic teacher. In the early 70's when I recommitted my life to the Lord I would listen to his program every day on a local Christian radio station I could get from Bellingham. Jan

I remember 78s, 45s etc too. My first record (an odd one for a child really, but I enjoyed it) was South Pacific. I loved "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger Than Springtime am I". I was a romantic even then. I hate to say this, especially as a Brit, but I was never very keen on the Beatles. My sixties favourites were the Batchelors, motown artistes and Cliff (mainly because of his Christian witness). I was in my early teens when he was saved, and it made quite an impression on me.
