  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you really think He wants this?

Okay. I was just saying that even if we were to agree that December 25 is not accurate, there's no agreement among Christians on what date to move it to! As a result, moving it really is not an option.

I agree. I like it just the way it is even with it's inaccuracies. In a way "the 'holidays' of this world have become the 'holidays' of our Lord."

My brother was four, I not quite three. He whispered to me "Dad is Santa Claus." Didn't bother me a bit. In fact when I was about two my mother hung a stocking on the wall right next my bed, telling me that Santa would fill it with goodies. I was terrified.

The irony is that about that same time my mother gave us a religious coloring book. On one page was Jesus surrounded by little children and lambs. Mother said, "That's Jesus, and he loves you." I got all warm and fuzzy, and believed in him from that moment.
Good for you! That is great! I was talking to a girl who is about 23 and she told me that the Santa lie is why most kids her age are Atheist. She said she found out Santa wasn't real and assumed Jesus wasn't either and her parents didn't do church so...

That's sad. As a kid I never connected Christmas and Santa Claus with God, Jesus, or the nativity even though they happen at the same time. I think God was preparing me for 'the calling' even then.

That could be true! As a kid I remember getting in trouble for lying around Christmastime and I was grounded and threatened with " no presents" then I found out he wasn't real and I asked them both to their face and they lied right to my face and that year I learned what a hypocrite was. I was very offended by the lie and I remember crying on my bed. I didn't want their presents. I wanted Jesus to be real but now I didn't know what to believe. I presented such a compelling case that I got ungrounded! I was 7.

Sorry about your experience. Mine was quite a bit different, different times I guess.

We celebrate the holiday, glorifying God. I see nothing evil about decorating a beautiful tree, and exchanging gifts; while teaching our kids that the season is about Jesus, and celebrating His birthday. My parents never lied to me, and I always found Christmas to be such a magical holiday; with the music, lights, etc (no, not magical in a wizard or witchcraft sort of way). We tell our kids that Santa is a pretend character, and that he was a person. They can pretend and have fun, while knowing the truth.

Do you really think Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior wants us celebrating a day in His honor by giving worldly goods and lying through our teeth to our children? They think Santa is real, and they hear its Jesus Birthday- then they find out Santa is NOT real and subconsciously assume Jesus isn't real either. When do we stop this dangerous tradition of lying on Christmas? So the question is " Do you think Jesus would want us celebrating His holy birth by lying to our kids about Santa?

* this question is not to condemn anyone as I am guilty of doing this with my children until I thought about it and I am just wondering if any other Christians have thought about it! Do you think He would want this?
I am not so old at 46 years old that I don't remember when I found out Santa wasn't real. I didn't feel lied to at all. To me, it was just a part of Christmas and a way that my mom and grandparents made it fun during the season. My kids as they have outgrown Santa have felt the same way.
I sure did. I caught them putting gifts out in the middle of the night. I wondered what else they lied to me about.
