  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you need to believe in certain doctrines to be saved?

Amen to the above post. The only doctrine I know of that one needs to believe to be saved is that Jesus Christ died on the cross for mine and your and the whole worlds sin. When I deserved to be on the cross instead of Him, He took my place. He arose from the grave third day and now sits on the right hand of the Father. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved...For whosever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Rom. 10:9,13)

Doctrine is what we believe is necessary to be saved.
So, then I could say Jesus is my doctrine :)

I see what you mean though. You could probably take the things I believe and put them into a doctrine. I just wouldn't know why. Jesus is my righteousness, my holiness and my salvation. You can doctrinize everything, but I don't see the point in doing that to people, including Jesus.

Can a person who believes in Christ and live by his word, but maybe not as theological developed as a theologian be saved, for example, supposed cults, like mormons, seven day adventists, oneness penecostals, etc?

I will let Scripture speak for itself:

"And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house."

Acts 16:30-31 (AV)

It is by grace and by faith in God we are saved,

Paul writes otherwise:

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (AV)

We are saved by the grace of God alone. If you add on that we are saved by faith then you have just nullified grace.

if a person either ignorant, misinformed of understaning the concept of trinity and rejects it, but lives and breath by it, can he or she be save?

Just as Scripture says I believe that anyone who calls upon the name of Jesus of Nazareth is saved. Remember, the doctrines of the Trinity, Jesus' natures, etc. were formulated by men in various councils. Just because a church council said X is a dogma doesn't mean that they were correct, and the decisions of church councils are not binding on us.

Sounds good to me but talk to the professors at the seminaries, they will tell you the there are certain essential beliefs that a christian may need to know to be saved, kind a bit of a stretched, huh?

That is a stretch. Did the jailor know about any doctrines? No. Did the theif on the cross know about any doctrines? No. Yet the theif was promised by JC Himself that he would be in paradise.

And the apostles themselves... whew, arguing and quarreling and betraying and sleeping and building huts for Abraham and so forth.

Not to mention their own disciples and the rest of the Early Church Fathers argued amoungst themselves on who Jesus was, how He, the Father, and the HS were interelated, etc.

So, no. You don't need doctrine. You need Jesus.

:amen: My salvation rests on the fact that by the grace of God I have placed my trust in Jesus of Nazareth and what He did. Whether or not I believe in the Trinity, the Virgin Birth, and even what I believe about the nature of Jesus is irrelevant IMO.

You don't need to complicate it so much. What you believe is your doctrine. Simply put, That is what the word doctrine means.

I am saddened at the failure of our educational system that people who have even graduated high school now don't even understand the English language as well as our grand parents did without all that education.

Paul put it simply in his letter to the church at Rome.
Romans 10: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

I think this is a case of taking single verses in isolation and making too much of them.

The demons, as James said, know that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead. Does that mean they are saved? You need to take the lesson of the WHOLE Gospel.

Believing in Jesus is not just accepting a statement of fact, or reciting a line or two, it is following Jesus, being a trusting disciple, and trying to do what He taught.

As far as creeds and doctrines are concerned, the Catholic Church teaches that we are judged by our state of understanding. If we trust Jesus, and follow Him and know nothing of Creeds and doctrines, then we can be saved. If we know what the Creeds say, if we understand the importance of key teachings and then reject them willfully, this can threaten our status in the Lord, for it is rejecting His revelation.

Perhaps you could reconsider?
The verse says confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord,"

Do the demons you refer to truely Confess Jesus as their Lord?
