• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The term "Niginoth" which is written in the superscript of Ps.4-5-6, and many that follow. These superscripts are read before many of the psalms are read, signifying stringed instruments of music. Instruments played by the fingers, or by female musicians.

The term "niginoth," may be translated, "A Psalm of David to the master of music, who presides over the stringed instruments. The word itself is found in Ps.54-55-61, ---.

In N.T. generally used meaning a psalm, a song in praise of God. 1 Cor. 14:26, "Every one of you hath a psalm." Eph.5:19, "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody." Col.3:16, "Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs." Septuagint for Hebrew, "Psalms."

It kind of puts a hole in the Church of Christ's teaching that musical instruments are not to be used in services, don't you agree.

Phil
I like music in church :)

Music/Instruments in church worship today question [poll thread]

Reve 18:22 and sound/voice of lyrers/harpists and of musicians and of flutists/aulhtwn <834> and of trumpeters not no should be being heard in Thee still.
And every craftsman/artificer of every craft not no may be being found in Thee still.
And sound of a millstone not no should be being heard in Thee still.
MUSIC IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

*snip*
However, after the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D., the Jews forbade the use of instruments in worship. "As long as the Judaeo-Christians remained one of the Jewish sects, they continued the musical traditional of their forefathers."
Again, "How far Judaism's prohibition of all instrumental music used shortly after the destruction of the temple had influenced the cause of events, is hard to determine.

Things that are continued in the New Testament, are substantially the same, or of a similar nature of those in the old. Example,

The expression, "To come to God," occurs both in the Old and the N.T. In the Old it simply means to go up to the temple; in the New, it is continued so that what was once imperfect, now becomes perfect, and now implies a mental, or spiritual approach unto the Most High, and also the spiritual worship of God.

So also, since the many particulars related in the O.T. concerning the sacrificed victims, the priests, and the temple are now transferred in the N.T. to the atoning death of Christ; to the offering of Himself unto death; and to the Christian church.

Thus the veil of figures in the Old Testament has been withdrawn.

Did you know,

Serpent charming is an art which has been practiced in Egypt, and throughout the East from antiquity past. The art is still preformed in various countries by persons who practiced it for their own livelihood, or for the amusement of others. Those who practice this art are usually those who inherit the trade from some family member. There are several allusions to serpent-charming in the O.T.

Ps.58:4-5, “Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder (cobra) that stoppeth her ear; Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.”

Eccles.10:11, “Surely the serpent will bit without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.”
Jer.8:17, “For, behold, I will send serpents, cuckatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD.”
