My favourite is Peter, and I have a ton of reasons why, but for now I'll list five(-ish):
Peter modelled what a Christian should be. I see myself in Peter (and I'm a girl), and I find him so relatable.
Okay...your turn.
- Peter was the first to recognize Jesus as the Son of God, as revealed to him by God himself -- what an honour! (Matthew 16:16-17)
- Peter walked on water with Jesus! (Matthew 14:22-36) I mean, imagine having the guts to ask and then hearing Jesus say that one wonderful word: 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water. 29 “Come,” he said. Wow. Come. And of course, we learn the valuable lesson of what happens when you take your eyes off of God (or waver in your faith). You sink.
- Peter's boldness earns him the unique position of spokesperson among the apostles. He was also part of the inner circle, along with James and John. (Who wouldn't want these two roles!). As an aside, I picture Peter becoming very annoyed -- jealous even -- at hearing John continuously call himself the apostle whom Jesus loved, ha ha. I get this, as I'm an only child...and, like Peter, I would totally want to be the favourite and closest of them all.
- (Matthew 16:18) Peter was the rock on which the church was built (his name literally means "rock")
- (Matthew 16:19) He was given the keys to the kingdom of heaven!!! Imagine that!
