Do any of you have a call on your life to become a minister, missionary, youth leader....?

I feel like I'm being led to be more involved in youth and I don't know why. My daughters are 20 and 17. To tell the truth, I don't like being around youth that much (my 17 year old talks non-stop). I'll be retiring in 3 years 3 months and 15 days (but who's counting) and I know I want to do some missions work in S. Africa. Don't know about the youth thing, pray for me.

How about you, are you being called into duty?

That is wonderful about doing missions work in S. Africa. Maybe you have a gift for the youth you are not yet aware of. Or maybe the gift is for the youth of that area. I am simply amazed at people who could leave the safety of the US to do work abroad. Please let us know what you decide. :)

You know, for quite a few years, I felt the call to do some type of mission work. And I was so scared that that meant going to some foreign country to live. And for awhile I tried to ignore that call and put it out of mind. (Yeah, like God was going to let that happen! :) ) A few years ago, I had the opportunity to go to Jamaica on a mission trip. So I went, asking God to show me if this is what He wanted me to do. I really enjoyed what I did there, but I kept having this feeling that God was telling me that there were people who lived just down the road from me that needed my help was well, I didn't need to go to a foreign country to be useful.

To make a long story short, through my church, a local mission group as been put together that works at helping those in our local community that need help. I have been amazed at how everything has worked together to set this group up.

I guess the moral of the story is that I shouldn't have been afraid of the call and you never know what direction it may lead in. I was fearing the jungles of Africa (not that I wouldn't like the opportunity to go there) when God had in mind my community.

And I work with our youth group on projects as I can. I think they need good role models these days. From what I have read in your posts, I think you would be a great person to do just that! But will be praying for you as you have requested.

Thank you for the encouragement and the nice words.

I taught a Sunday School lesson once on being a missionary in your own neighborhood. I agree, we can help right where we live. My calling to S. Africa is to help in some way all the children orphaned by AIDS, there are thousands.

Robb, I've got over 3 years, I'll make sure when I'm saving, I'll save for that laptop with a wireless modem.

Right now I'm really not sure about my specific calling. I feel like I really want to get involved in social charity through the church, though--like ministering to the homeless, those with HIV/AIDS, etc. I'm not certain at this point if this is what God wants me to do. I don't like leadership positions but I love working with people one-on-one. At the moment I'm concerned about finding a church first (I'm sure everyone here knows about my denom search) and then after that I'm hoping for God to hit me on the head with a 2-by-4 and make it ver clear to me what He wants me to do as a personal ministry for the church. Unfortunately for me, so often God whispers--no bells, chimes, bright lights, 2-by-4s or anything attention-grabbing. Perhaps one of these days I'll learn to listen more carefully. ;)

I happened to think of something else, in regards to your youth work. If you are not sure about the leading, you could try it out for a bit and see how it goes. Maybe it is a place you have been gifted and you just don't know it yet? There would be no harm in trying it. If it works out, great, you found another place you can serve. If it doesn't, you know that you tried it and it wasn't were you were meant to be placed. Maybe you could discuss it with your youth leader or leaders at church and get their take on it. That is another way to determine your gifts, ask others around you.

The work in South Africa with the children orphaned by AIDS sounds like very rewarding work. I am sure that workers are very much needed in that area.

Remember Moses? "You want me to do what??"

God will equip you for the task at hand.

Amen Sister!!! I remember telling my husband I never wanted to teach adult Sunday School. I didn't feel I knew enough. I absolutely HATED training anyone to do anything at my work and heaven help them if they didn't catch on as fast I expected! Me and teaching...like oil and water.

Today I have the best attended adult classes in our congregation. I LOVE teaching. (Although I still hate training anyone at work. Fortuntately I don't have to do much of that anymore. ;) )

I am constantly amazed at how God orchestrates things in the least anticipated ways. He continues to keep me in total awe!

Peace

Sometimes other people are God's mouthpiece. God spoke to me partly to my heart, then confirmed it through a pastor. (My pastor spoke what I was thinking)
Maybe after the move, you will have a pastor that can easily hear the voice of the Spirit, or you will meet another person that does.

Have you ever thought of grief counseling? Or something like a hospital Chaplain?

Very right about God using other people as His mouthpiece. That's what's so great about being God's instrument on earth, I think--you just never know when He's going to work through you personally or send someone your way to help you.

I'd really like to get involved in grief couseling or helping people cope with stigmatized diseases like leprosy and AIDS, etc. I feel very young and green at this point and just hope and pray that God will guide me in His time. I was reading something this morning about how so many diseased people long for human touch and words of comfort, and I was just thinking, "Ya know . . . I can do that, and I wouldn't even have to get another college degree! Showing God's love to others would be nothing but a pleasure and profoundly rewarding experience."

Does anyone else ever feel like Jonah? I always feel like I resemble him because I usually put up a lot of resistance when I'm called to do something I don't want to do and then later I finally realize that God was right and had been all along. I'm one of those kicking-and-screaming Christians (as I call them) who is perfectly happy in her own little church world and then God tells her to do something and shoves her out into the world kicking and screaming like a toddler throwing a fit. It's only when I finally shut up that I see that God didn't send me out into the world all alone but He's standing right there with me. You would really think I'd learn a lesson from these experiences, but I've found that each time my reaction is about the same. Good thing God loves me in spite of myself. ;)

This talk of missionaries reminded me of the words imprinted above the door at my old church. As you left the church, if you looked up, you would see the words "You are now entering the mission field."

I think it's easy for us to think of foreign missions as the "missionairy" work, and while we know that everywhere we go, anyone we come in contact with is a mission field, we often over look that because it doesn't seem as extravagant as foreign missions. I know I'm extremely guilty of this!

God has called some of us for foreign missions, and some of us, he has called to minister in our own church, our own neighborhood, our workplace, our school, even our families/homes. But one thing is for sure - no work done for God is more or less important than another!!!

I think it is AWESOME to see the callings that God has place on others lives. How beautiful the harvest would be if we all actually were sensitive and LISTENED and OBEYED His callings! I'm so grateful to know that God doesn't "call" us, without "equipping" us. I know, I often feel so inadquate when doing God's work - but I'm only a vessel - He is doing the work, not me!

Oh, and to answer the OP - I feel as though I have been called into Children's ministries...........
