  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ah yes, the ever growing question that has been seeping into my mind since I have been on this website. On the secular portions, I can understand their disagreements with what the Christians who get media attention say. However, take a walk over to the Christian Only section, and it's even worse with the Catholic v Protestant arguments. Now, onto the question at hand.

Do you hate Christians? If possible, please base your answer off of more than just Pat Robertson and Jerry Fallwell comments please. Please provide clarification if you do or do not, and also, this is about the topic at hand, not abortion, homosexuality and other morals. I would like to see where the secular world actually stands on this. By the way, I'm not a fundamentalist Christian, I'm a Spiritual one.

I was torn on this question. and whilst it is never good to generalise (linguistic joke)

Most of the christians I have met personaly (here in the UK) as quite reasonable people but having heard people like "Dad" talk on these forums i had to pick the "ignorant" option.

Hate is too strong of a word. I guess resent is about as close as it gets. Aside from their current, erm, agenda (for lack of a better word), they have done some very destructive things in history, such as the sacking of Constantinople by the Romans (Christians v. Christians, sort of amusing) which basically allowed the Ottomans to walk right in and was considered the last breath of the Byzantine Empire (not so amusing.) The most convincing theory for the destruction of the Library at Alexandria (which set world knowledge back unfathomable amounts of years) is that it was destroyed during the excesses of the Theodosian decree, which forced libraries shut down and pagan temples burned, one of which was located inside the library.

Christians destroyed all Slavic writings which were not in Cyrillic. They destroyed the temples, idols, writings, and everything else of the Slavs to the point where there is little to no knowledge of pre-Christian Slavic culture today.

If it's any consolation, I resent Islam for basically the exact same reasons. (culture wrecking.)

I have love for people based on their character, without much consideration to anything else. I even like fundies as long as their good people at heart. I dont like Republicans though, they are evil down to the core ;)

Yes. Of course, I hate the sinner, not the sin.

Really your poll was too limiting. I hate Chrsitianity and all other superstition that people take seriously. I don't hate the people themselves until they do something to me personally, or they do something to the community I live in, and then I hate the particular set of those people that do whatever it is they are doing (Kansas school board).

I don't HATE anyone, but the fundamentalists such as Falwell and Robertson irritate me. I used to think Pat Robertson was simly misguided, until I watched one of his fund raisers. He failed to raise the amount of money he wanted, and then told the audience that becuase of this, more people would go to hell. I think Billy Graham is for real, just simplistic.

For me, it's more of a "love the sinner, hate the sin" kind of thing. I think the beliefs and practices of some Christians--particularly within contemporary American conservative evangelicalism--are beyond reprehensible, and to say I hate what they stand for and the things they believe doesn't even cover it. Many of their beliefs are just outright blasphemous to me. But, I try very hard to separate the person from the awful things they believe.

I don't hate anything. I do not like some Christians, while I like others. If you are a fundy trying to control the world, and make them act and believe just like you, I will not like you.

If you are a Christian that is about Jesus, and your love for him, chances are I'll like you, because you aren't trying to control me. YOu are just living the way you believe.

There are very few people in this world that I would say I hate, and it has nothing to do with their theological beliefs, or lack thereof.

I think Christianity is incorrect, but it would be silly, and sad, for me to hate an entire group of people just because I think they're mistaken about something.

Hate is as much a part of the human emotional spectrum as love. Its a part of who we are. To deny this is to deny reality.

I disagree with the notion that hate is a part of human emotion. What most of us call hate is really irritation or annoyance.. "I hate green beans", or "I hate all _____ "(fill in the blanks). We have no idea what we really mean when we use that word. To say you "hate" anyone is so evil and vile that it conjurs up Jesus' admonition about calling your brother a fool (raca). You don't mean it so don't say it.

It really depends on point of view - if you asked camp survivors - how do you feel about german officers - they would probably use the word hate. If your life experience is someone welding a baseball bat at you in the name of Christ or threatening to blow you up for picking up a pamplet in an abortion clinic then maybe that view is what judgement is based on.

I don't hate Christian, but I hate and despise many of the acts and in some cases the individuals who justify every hurtful word, action and intent by thier Christianity. It would never surprise me if the worst most despicable acts were done under the umbrella of Christianity, in the same way I think if a nuclear warhead is launched, it will be done with the conviction of the person who launched it that God is on that person's side.

I chose other. The unfortunate side effect of the question is that you've lumped all Christians together, which makes it very difficult to answer.

I personally don't 'hate' anyone. It's a strength of emotion that I reserve for occassions so special, that they never really happen. However, I do desperately dislike the groups of Christians who seem to believe that their way is the only way and the government should be ruled accordingly. They tend to sound like bigots and crybabies and they just aren't my cup of tea.

Then there are the Christians who are very strong in their faith, but understand that it is personal and that we do not live in a theocracy. I, personally, rather enjoy the Christians who live their life and let me live mine... which is really not all that different.

I don't particularly care for American fundamentalist Christians, especially when they take their personal beliefs and turn them into a lobbyist group. However, I do know a few American fundamentalist Christians that I like as people.

:)
