I was just wondering who here builds their own computers. We've been building our own computers for a few years now and cannot imagine buying a store bought package deal one with all the associated probems again. If you build your own computers what is your motivation? And if you still buy them from the store, why?

I haven't bought a system from a store since 2000.

Why? A few reasons. The big one is price, however. When I realized that I could build a system for hundreds of dollars less than the same system off the shelf might cost, I was hooked. Add on the ability to customize ad infinitum, etc.

I've built a few :)

The Next one I'm looking at building will be a smaller one, using this
epia-ml.jpg
Or somthing close to it.

I'll be using it for an inhouse Linux Server, Wireless Keyboard / Mouse.
20G Harddrive and about 1/2 G Memory

Motherboard is 17 cm x 17 cm in size :)

I like building my own systems. We do have a Dell that we bought a couple of years ago and an E-Machines we bought last year for our daughter. My favorite computer though is the one I built this past spring. We call it the big purple nightmare. LOL!

I was given a store bought computer for school. It's nice, but I'm discovering its limitations concerning the motherboard and other proprietary components. I will definitely build my next computer.

The only problem I have with building our own computers - my house looks like this! Oh, and if anyone's wondering about the box fan on the computer in the corner it's because it's in desperate need of a new video card and we're trying to keep the old one from dying on us. If anyone has a video card they'd like to donate (preferably an ATI All-in-wonder 9600 XT :D ) we'd be more than happy to take it off your hands! LOL

Yeah ... I prefer to build my own.

In terms of cost, for a budget system, you can't really build one for less than you'd buy one. As you start getting into a little higher end stuff, you can save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

I just prefer to build it my way and have what I want on there and nothing else.

Nope, but I do have a ASUS AGP-V6600/32M Sitting around collecting dust

Beleve it's still good, though the fan was giving me a few probs, but a good de-dusting should fix that.

No, unfortunately, I do not build my own computers. I wish I did though. I would love to be able to make a computer to my exact standards and specifications. However, I am not very good when it comes to hardware so I don't know how to build computers. Otherwise, I would build my own. My best friend builds computers for people though. He has been building computers for quite some time and is very skilled at it. He told me he would teach me how to build computers sometime but as of yet, neither of us has had the time for this.

It's not that hard really.

1) Buy parts (Motherboard/CPU/Fan/Memory/Harddrive/CD-DVD/Case)
2) Install Memory --> Motherboard
3) Install CPU--> Motherboard
4) Install Fan--> CPU
5) Install Motherboard --> Case
6) Install Harddrives & CD/DVD Drives
7) Hook up cables
8) Install Other cards Video/SOUND/ or whatever else you want/need
9) Install OS & Enjoy ;)
