Do we have the right to harm ourselves?

Do we have the right to harm ourselves? It seems to me that if we belong only to ourselves then we have every right. But if there's some sense in which we belong to others then we have no right.

Thoughts?

Maybe according to Secular Humanism since 'man is the center of all things'...but in reality, we are not. The Creator of this Universe who is personal and relational OWNS everything that he has created including Us whom he calls his most greatest creation. The 'right' we have is to look after ourselves , treat our entire Being with the care and love that the Creator desires for us, and to view ourselves in truthfulness that we have dignity and infinite worth which is counter to the Secular Humanist view of Us being nothing but a glorified piece of Pond Scum washed up on the beach from dead chemicals with as much as worth as what the famous atheist Richard Dawkins recently pronounced : ' The Human Fetus has as much worth as an adult Pig' .

We have the responsibility to expose the foolishness and evil behind declarations as from Dawkins , and we have the responsibility to count our entire Being as a wonderful blessing and benefit to be used of the Creator by submitting our entire Will and Intellect to him. Only in THAT will we find real fulfilling peace, joy, worth, and hope beyond the grave .

Read Psalm 139 and see just how wonderfully created we really are. Remember, its vitally important to shun Secular Humanism and all the brainwashing we got going thru the public school system otherwise life will seem and feel meaningless which leads to harming ourselves either physically or emotionally. And that is Satans agenda.

Such a broad question, with no one answer.
Especially with such a loose (actually no) definition of what you consider harming oneself.

Example: Getting a ear piercing is Harming oneself, and I doubt many would argue that you don't have the right to get an ear piercing.

Do we not belong to God?

If one believes in God then yes we belong to God and have no rights that God has not given us. If we do not believe in God, then it is certainly a reasonable and logical position to say that that one belongs to oneself and has the right to do with oneself whatever one pleases.

I get that, but why 'intentionally' harm ourselves. Would God really appreciate us doing that with the gift of life he has given us?

Better ask about circumcision then if you ever meet the god implied by your faith.

AFAIK circumcision is not actually harmful. Painful maybe but not anymore harmful than a tattoo or an ear piercing. Besides being irrelevant to the OP's question. Do we owe anything of ourselves to others? Christians insist that we do but that is based upon our belief that God has made that determination. What He has demanded of a group of people that He has made a previous covenant with does not address the issue the OP raises.

Yes. I don´t deal in "rights" (other than as a legal term - and this is apparently not what you have in mind). The question is meaningless to me. Could you reword it for me?

No one truly believes that accidental materials gave us everything including our non material human entities of mind, will, love, reason, logic, abstract thinking, etc... Its just a convenient charade so One can be his own 'god' thereby doing whatever he feels like ....even harming himself deliberately or due to consequences of bad decision making. Failure = Success doing the wrong things .

Being 'an atheist' is not a reasonable nor logical position....and harming Oneself deliberately is an affront to the Creator and to Oneself who has the responsibility to care for him/herself. Its called self preservation and its a concept the Creator has given all of us because we are wonderfully made . Read Psalm 139 for just how wonderful.

Believe in and follow Secular Humanism, and watch how fast a Person goes downhill in life because he cant even have basic respect and dignity toward Himself. This is what we were all brainwashed with thru the public school system , but now we are done with the indoctrination, we can get back to loving God and appropriately loving ourselves .

I refuse to insist I cannot be wrong and that anyone that disagrees with me must be doing so out of malevolence.

People insist on being right oftentimes so they can do what they want in life , even if being right about something is illogically absurd. Sometimes truth simply isn't desired and is veto'd or suppressed in favor of lifestyle choices or the will to inflict pain on oneself .

That's right. Fortunately, we belong only to ourselves. We are no one else's property.
