  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

any ideas?

Hillel put it a better way.

"What is hateful to thyself do not do to another. That is the whole Law, the rest is Commentary."

Putting it this way, and avoiding you doing something that you would like but they would hate, works a little better.

I don't like being whacked on the head with a wet fish, therefore you would be doing something that I don't like to me, therefore you would be violating the golden rule.

But i would have it done to me, so therefore i would do it to others.
Or am i getting it wrong?
Must be all the fish whacking.

if you mean that by misspelling others as overs then it's flawed ... What did you have in mind exactly?

Before they do unto you-survival of the fittest.

as has been done unto you- eye for an eye; Justice

as you would have done unto you- honorable

only others who also like being whacked on the head wth a wet fish.

But that isn't the saying. It's not "Do unto others as you would have them do to you... if they would want you to."

So yes, I think that statement is flawed.

That is according to the letter of the Golden Rule but not the spirit. Perhaps the letter should be changed to match the spirit better? I'm not sure how it could be, but the spirit of the Golden Rule is based on empathy.

That is, it is not enough to do unto others exactly what you like done to you. Instead, you should do unto others as you would have them do unto you if you were in their position. In other words, a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] may enjoy pain, but it is still wrong for him to inflict pain on someone who does not enjoy it. To understand and follow the Golden Rule and its variations, it is necessary to empathize with your fellow man so that you understand what he feels when you do something to him -- not just what you would feel if he did the same to you.

Luke 6 said:
27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the [one] cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not [to take thy] coat also.
30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask [them] not again.
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
34 And if ye lend [to them] of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and [to] the evil.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
