• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

To anyone, I need help! ALOT!!! I am a varsity Cheerleader, and I'm one of the only soon to be freshmen to make the squad this year. There are three others, and they're bases. I'm a flyer. My problem is, that I've been cutting weight to stay in shape, and keep up with the other flyers, since I'm the only freshmen flyer, this makes it extremely hard for me. All the other flyers are returning.

Well, In order to cut weight, I've not been eating. In fact, not eating was a problem I had even before I started cheerleading. My boyfriend is really worried about me, he keeps telling me that I need to eat, and I do, just not alot, I only eat when I'm hungry, and I don't fill myself up, I just make it so I'm not hungry anymore.

He says I have an eating disorder, and that it's out of control, but I think I'm in perfect control of what's going on. What should I do?

Oh Honey!

I am worried that you are on the road to an eating disorder. You may not be there yet, but if you keep at it you will be. Esepcailly if you are doing it to lose weight. Its not a healthy thing, it will make cheerleading really hard, as a flier, you have to be in control, you gotta be tough but petite. You cant do that if you dont eat. I only know this as my sister is a cheerleader (mainly a base, but often a flier as well). You wont be able to do all the stunts that you need to do if you cant concentrate and everything is alot of work.

Just think about what is important, being the smallest flier, or being healthy and alive and strong enough to be a cheerleader.

I doubt you really need to lose weight, you are probably fine as you are! as long as you eat the right food, and do the right amount of excercise, then I'm sure you'll b fine, I don't really know much about cheerleading or how much you have to weigh, how fit you must be, etc... as there is nothing really like that over here in England, but mine started off with just wanting to lose a little weight, to be a normal weight as everyone else my age, but soon enough, i got obsessed with it, i always though, just another half a stone, just a few more pounds, but you end up never happy, no matter how many times you tell yourself that you are incontroll, it is easy to lose it, and easy to end up with an ED. You wont even realise what is going on, it will just happen, you wont even know how bad you are getting.
I guess, my advise to you would be to talk to the other girls, see how much you should weighon average for a cheerleader, and for you body type, and also check it with a health consultant of some type, like your doctor. They will make sure that your body is getting all the energy it needs, and, if you are becoming a cheerleader, then it is likely that you will be using up more energy, therfore needing to eat more, as long as you eat the right types of food to stay healthy, then you should be fine, don't cut out food, just the bad things, like chocolate, then you would have no reason to worry about it!
I hope this has helped you!
God bless
I hope you feel better and less insecure soon!

My daughter was a flyer on year and really enjoyed it. I don't think you have an eating disorder, I think your just concerned about not being too heavy for your team mates to "fly" you in the air! I bet, being as you were given the position of flyer that you're NOT overweight. It's okay to watch what you eat, and to not let yourself get too full. Just don't skip meals. If you wonder what you should weigh for your bodytype and height ask your dr. The "normal" weight for women (I realize that you're only 15) is 100 pounds for the first 5 ft that you are and then 5 pounds for each inch. I'm 5'4" and "should" weigh approx. 120. I hope this helps!

Thats when you are going to start having problems! I know this sounds hard, but if youre not hungry, at least eat a little bit. That way your body wont go into starvation mode. Even if it is a piece of fruit, thats better than skipping the meal all together.

I've been skipping a lot of meals lately. And I'm not usually hungry anymore. It's kinda scary, so yeah.
I have found that when I skip meals for a while, I stop getting hungry (I know that sounds backwards, because most people would think if you skip meals you would START getting hungry). Well that might be the case for the first day or two, because your body is used to eating so when you suddenly stop, your body misses it and you do feel hungry for a while at first. But if you keep it up, I've found that the hunger goes away and you really don't want to eat anything. So that is a bad thing and can be very dangerous.

I think it's okay to not eat anything for one day (like some people may FAST on occasion for religious reasons). And so that is okay. Not eating for one day is not going to hurt anybody.

But I think you should make it your goal to never go more than one day without eating. For one thing, as a cheerleader you need as much energy and strength as possible. And you can't get those if you aren't eating.

Not to mention, I don't know if you're familiar with the Terri Shiavo case. Terri was a young woman that had a heart attack due to an eating disorder (lack of potassium, I think), which put her into a vegetative state. She had severe brain damage from lack of oxygen during her heart attack. Anyway, there was this big debate over whether to let her continue to live (be fed through a feeding tube) or to let her die (remove her tube and just let her dehydrate and starve to death). Her fate, earlier this year was a slow and horrible death due to removal of her feeding tube.

My point is, eating disorders, no matter what kind, are extremely dangerous. Many people have died from them. You don't want to head down that path.

If you are concerned about weight but are willing to eat regular meals. I know of a diet that works very well and it's healthy. You can stick with the plan just long enough to lose any weight that you might need to lose to remain a flyer, but don't stay on it any longer than that. You are probably a terrific flyer and the weight is probably nothing for you to obsess about. Think about it, even as much as cheerleading is important to you, it's not worth damaging your health over. Your health is going to be something that affects you the rest of your life (which could be very short if you let an eating disorder take over). Always think about the future, beyond cheerleading and high school. Someday you are going to get married and want to have children. And your husband and children are going to want and need you. So don't do anything to yourself that's going to jeopardize any of that.

Okay... back to talking about how you don't get hungry anymore after not eating for a while... I've found just the opposite is true also. If you eat well for a few days, your appetite will return and you will get hungry. God designed us to get hungry so we will eat. It's the way our bodies work. If we don't eat, our bodies don't work right. It's the same as putting in fuel in our cars, after a while the car runs out of gas and doesn't go anywhere.

So especially if you want to remain a good cheerleader, you've got to eat. It helps give you strength and energy to be the best cheerleader you can be. I think if you are already a flyer, then that's because you are a good weight for that job already. My daughter is 12 and she was a flyer last year. I noticed the way they picked who would be flyers is just by picking the ones who had the lowest weight. But they never said any of the girls had to remain a certain weight or be below a certain weight to be a flyer. I think saying so puts too much pressure on girls to focus on their weight when there is really no problem with their weight in the first place.

Okay, about that diet I said you might want to try. If interested, PM me and I'll PM you back with a website link for the info (it'll cost you $27 to get access to it)....or I can just type up a copy of my own eating plan for you to get an idea of it. It's very simple and consists of normal food (not a bunch of weird ingredients) and is quick and easy to prepare. Some meals are just a little sandwich or bowl of mixed fruit. The reason I mention this diet is because it would be better for you to eat these small meals than to not eat anything at all (you eat 4 times a day for 9 days and then get to take 3 days off where you eat anything you want... yes, anything, even pizza).

Not eating does horrible things to your body even though you may not see it or realize it. So please don't ever go more than one day without eating. It's not safe.

Hope you don't think I'm lecturing you or anything. I'm just trying to help. I've struggled with my own eating disorders when I was a teenager and in my early 20's. In fact, when I was 20 I was diagnosed with anorexia. I quickly got over it with some help and I've been in full recovery from all eating disorders ever since. I'm a a normal, healthy weight now (well, I've had 2 children and with the last one, I've had to go on this diet to help me lose the extra pregnancy weight). I'm glad I was able to escape from a lifetime of eating disorders and possible early death. Since getting married and having children of my own, my weight is no longer and issue, even if I do gain during the holidays or whatever. There is just so much more to life than obsessing over pounds.

Hope this helps. Remember God loves you. :)

it sounds to me like you actually dont have a problem. you eat when you're hungry, and thats great that you dont stuff yourself or thorw up or anything. it sounds like its just your attitude towards food thats the problem-the fact that you feel you have a problem.

reassure yourself that eating what you want, when you want is exactly what you should do, so your body is getting what it needs right now. therefore, youre probably in perfect shape!

hope i helped, pm if you want to talk

As others said above, it takes a lot of stamina to do what you're doing. Your body is a complex machine, and needs the minerals and other nutrients to handle that task. When you decide what to eat, think of what properties are in each food...will they help or hurt your performance and your general feeling of well-being. Your life totally changes when your health drops.

The potassium...that depletes when you sweat, too; a jar of K pills is cheap. Try supplementing your eating with compressed alfalfa tablets, or fresh parsley. You get a broad range of nutrients without a lot of calories.

Well, here's the problem. I didn't really want to admit it, but I do throw up alot after eating. On purpose. I purge, and it makes me feel so much better. But usually that's only after I eat REALLY hearty meals, like outback, and stuff I cook for my parents. My boyfriend knows about it, and I just found out that part of his problem with me being like this is that he was bulimic at one point too, so he's really worried, especially since he nearly ended up dying.... But I just couldn't admit that I had it. Now I have to. Because I'm scaring myself. And it's starting to hurt worse when I purge....

Loving one, I'd really like that. That's a great idea. But unfortunately I can't afford that... Right now I owe my 'rents a TON of money... so... heh. But I like the sound of that.

You're gonna need some calcium too. The bulimia rots out your teeth. You don't want fractured bones when you're doing that kind of soaring through the air.

It's interesting that your bf had it too. Does he feel like he's totally done with purging? Maybe he's a little scared for himself too...he knows how hard it was to change his way of thinking. Who wants do do that? It makes no sense, until you realize you're dying.

Would it help to make a list of foods that you wouldn't be mad at yourself for eating, or is it everything in general?

If you stick to foods that keep your blood sugar more stable, you will feel less out of control, swayed by ups and downs and cravings. Sugars will drive you to binge, by putting a demand on your system (it's not all in your head). When you starve all day, then eat something, you can feel this blood sugar change happening and it's sometimes scary. Plan to eat an occasional slice of cheese, some nuts...soy milk. Start to pay attention to foods that make you feel out of control, and ones that make you feel stronger.

It's good that you're cooking for your parents...they are probably relieved that you have some level of interest in food. Give them lists of things they should buy for you to cook. Help them with their fears, wondering how to keep you alive and functional.

Oh- and make sure you tell people if you're dizzy! I just witnessed a heatstroke this morning and thought the person was just tired and hot. They had lost vision and balance. (Water is your friend.)

Er... well. My parents don't know that I am bulimic. And It's gonna be a while before I can admit. But I think that mostly if I keep to fruits and veggies, I will feel better. Most of the time it's just food in general, but I'm trying to allow myself to keep some things down. And don't worry, I've been a good girl and have been taking my vitamins... ^_^

He's completely done purging, and he's trying to take care of me. I just worry that I'm stressing him out. And I worry that by being bulimic, It'll be harder for me to set an example and lead him to God. So yeah...

Maybe so, but he could feel betrayed if he found out you lied about it. I don't think that everything in your life has to be out in the open; some things don't have to be the topic of every conversation.

He must love you a lot. It's nice to have someone beside you who has gone through that and understands the motivations...doesn't just tell you to stuff your face. You have worked hard to get where you are.

With ED's, often people are angry at themselves for not having enough self-control (while also being pleased that they have), and they are afraid that their eating will get out of control. What happens in the long run, though--the body goes into starvation mode and panics, compensates, and you end up gaining more weight than you would have eating normally.

You mentioned that it's starting to hurt worse; that's another area where your body will need to overcompensate in order to heal itself. Your stomach acid is burning away the tissue in the esophagus, throat, and mouth. That will give you more of a sensation of hunger (and pain!), the need to coat the raw tissue against the acid.

You high discipline will pay off for a couple of years, but your body won't put up with it that long.

ED's can become so thought-absorbing that they take away from the other things you want to accomplish in life. Appearances are only a small part of what will get you favor with others. Knowledge, kindness, teamwork, ability to motivate others, reliability, creativity, problem-solving and strategy, negotiating sensibilities, talents...these are things that will prompt people to seek you out for a job, for schools, for relationships. You are probably strong in several of these areas.

Notice how dieting doesn't really make us more loveable. In fact, it sometimes ends up with others feeling alienated.

Well since you can't afford it, I'd be happy to write up a couple of my own menus for you (from that diet plan). They each are for 11 days, eating very small and simple meals (4 meals a day). And then you get to go off the plan for 3 days, eating whatever you want. The thing though, is that you will NEED to eat pretty good on those 3 days because it's those 3 days that allow your body to receive more calories than usual so your body doesn't think you're starving...and you won't go into starvation mode (where your body holds on tight to your fat cells). So if you have some weight to lose, this is the best way to do it without falling into a point where you are not eating much, yet not losing any weight either.

I think this would be good for you, because you can control your weight to a level that you think would be good for keeping you a flyer, but not letting yourself become too thin. You can follow the menus for those times when you might need to lose a little weight and then go off the plan and just maintain. There's never any need to stay on the plan for an extended period of time. And this way, you'll be eating healthy yet staying slim.

Let me know if you want those menus and I'll PM them to you. I only have 2 menus (getting you through 24 days), but they are my favorites and the ones I alternate between. They are very similar, but there are some slight differences (so I don't get tired of always eating the same things over and over). They are really simple menus, that's one reason I like them because of the ease of following them and preparation. And they are easy to take along with you in a small plastic bowl with lid to wherever you're going. For example, I go to my parents house maybe once a month on Sundays to eat a meal with them and my sister and her husband. But since I have my own eating plan, I just take along whatever my choice from the menu for that day and put it on my plate there. It's no big deal. My parents used to freak when I was younger for not eating and so forth, but they don't seem to have a problem with my following this plan. At least they see I am eating something and it looks healthy and satisfying (and it IS).

You are supposed to lose about 9 pounds per menu (per 11 days). I have lost that much when I stick to it, but sometimes I don't stick exactly to the menus (I'll substitute sometimes if I go out to eat in a restaurant, for example), but I still lose weight very well when I don't stick to it exactly. So it's not something you have to follow to a T. But if you do, you'll have very good results.

But you can lose 9 pounds EACH time you do this, and not just 9 pounds the first week and then only 1 or 2 pounds each week thereafter. The reason it's a steady 9 pounds each time you do it, is because of those 3 days in between them where you get to eat whatever you want. The extra calories you get for those 3 days keeps your metabolism going full force. So then when you do the plan every time, it's like the first time of doing it and you lose that large amount of 9 pounds EVERY time. So it's possible to lose 9 pounds the first 11 days, another 9 pounds the next 15-26 days, another 9 pounds the next 30-41 days, etc. A constant loss of 9 pounds with each session. I think that is pretty good, considering no matter WHAT diet anyone follows, there is usually a good weight loss in the beginning but it tapers off to very little soon after. With this plan, your weight loss stays high no matter what. So that is why one only needs to stay on it to reach their desired weight and not stay on it all the time. Just use it at times when you feel you need to slim up a little (like before a major cheer competition, for example), and not stay on it all the time. With this plan, you can be in control of your weight without doing all that unhealthy stuff like throwing up and not eating at all.

So let me know if you want a copy of my menus and I'll PM them to you. No worries over not being able to afford anything. I've already paid for this plan and I'd be happy to share my menus with you free of charge. It works GREAT! I think you'd be happier following this than having an ED. And it wouldn't harm your body because you're eating healthy. That's the plus of this, you get to lose weight easily and still eat healthy and not have to worry with throwing up and not eating, or harming your body in any way. It's great to be in control of your weight and be healthy too!
