Do any of you smoke?

Why is it we have to hide this from other Christians? Is it a sin?

1 Corinthians 10:23
"Everything is permissible for me"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"--but I will not be mastered by anything.

Additionally, it sets a bad example. We're supposed to try to get to as blameless as possible and anyone can easily accuse me of it setting a bad example and ruining my body, lungs. I don't smoke.

God is very merciful unto each and every ones sufferings and struggles. Whether it's eating bad foods that harm cause we cannot afford to eat healthy or breathing in smog or staying out in the cold too long or the heat or having trouble stopping smoking. God loves us very much and is willing to help us with the good desires He has put upon our hearts.

I do. Secretly. Why is it we have to hide this from other Christians? Is it a sin?

Yes unfortunately I do smoke. Trying to quit, it's a nasty but addicting habit. Really been bugging me lately especially this year.

A relative of mine died unexpectedly from lung cancer in their 40's. They were highly devoted to natural foods and exercise... grew their own food, lived off the land. Smoking was their only vice.

I had to watch my grandparents grieve over a couple of their children dying before them, within a few years. Some people don't suffer from smoking until they're older, but some suffer much earlier.

No, but I'm tempted to.

I don't want to smoke. My non-stop smoking grandpa died from lung cancer. Even on his death bed he was smoking his life away.

Smoking's not good for your body. God said your body's a temple, and it should be kept clean.

Have you tried the vapor cigarettes? Heard good things about them.

Yes actually I want one. My mothers always been a smoker and she's trying to quit with them also and is really liking hers. Smoke itself is really bugging me but I don't have much luck quitting cold turkey, so I think that crutch may be useful and much healthier alternative.

Good, E-Cigs are a great way to stop smoking and putting harmful toxins into your lungs.

I've read all your comments (each of them) and want to add this:

When GOD gives ANY command like 'your body is a temple' it is ONLY for your good.
Not because HE is holy - but it is for your benefit to live that way.
(not for HIS good but ours).

And not for others (using scripture like a gun) and pointing and putting people down over what you think each sin is...like you are our only judge.

I am convinced what is sin to this guy may not be sin for that guy. It needs the SPIRITS leading and righteous discernment not our outward worldly judgment. We are NOT to ever judge someone from the flesh (from what we see) but rather in the SPIRIT (how GOD sees it). John 8:15

Lastly, all the law and legalism and pointing out 'sins' only INCREASES sin (never takes it away).
Want MORE sin?
Just preach the law and not GRACE and you've got it. Romans 5:20

Preach instead of 'who they are in CHRIST' and that they are loved unconditionally and the sins just fall away. As mercy triumphs over judgment! James 2:13

Hallelujah to the GOD that is NOT counting sins against us! 2nd Cor 5:18

My parents smoke and believe in God. What now?

Me too.
I stopped for 2 years (with God's help) after many unsuccessful attempts.

Earlier this year we discovered that smoking 1 or 2 a day can actually put my wife's illness into remission AND carries far less health risk than the pharmaceutical alternatives.

Of course, this is no excuse for me to be smoking again , but having tobacco in the house proved to be far too tempting...
I firmly believe that my God is working on me, He helped me quit once before and I am sure He will help me again, for I am too weak to do it alone.

As for the sin debate:

I am quite sure that doing anything that causes harm to our bodies is going to be displeasing to God, be that smoking, working too hard, eating junk, polluting our own environment, but to disobey the direct teachings of Jesus must be worse.
How many times a day we fail to love a stranger/give to the needy/pray for our enemies is far more important than how many times a day we light up a smoke.

I also need nicotine to help with an illness I have. If it is just the nicotine that your wife needs please check into the e cigs. Doctors have proven them to be far healthier than analogs, you are only getting the nicotine and not the 3000+ chemicals that are in analogs. You are welcome to contact me about my journey on quitting cigs using the e cig. My health has improved dramatically since quitting smoking.

I do not believe that smoking is a sin, but it is unhealthy. Just as many things we do are unhealthy, but we are fallable beings, we will not be perfect until we are resurrected into our eternal bodies.

Smoking hurts the witness that you are doing for Christ.

I know I will not be able to listen unhindered to a sermon by a pastor who has a cigarette on him, or has a lit cigarette on standby.

I think one need to go to the beginning - smoking is often started by deceptive means - young kids start out of rebellion to parents, being secretive, they are breaking one of Ten Commandments to obey and honor their parents.

Look to the beginning of WHY you started smoking in the first place. Often it has its roots in sin, and this is why we must unroot it out. Repent for the disobedience and show you mean it by quitting it.

Just two cents if it applies to you.
