Isn't it true that the Patriarchs of Jerusalem, Antioch, Constantinople and Alexandria were canonizing Saints and Martyrs independently of Rome? This is what I meant. If you take all the martyrs that have been canonized even after 800 AD by these Patriarchs (when the schism is alleged to really have taken place due to St. Photius removing the Pope from the communion commemoration) and then consider all those killed by the muslims and the communists after 1054, the Orthodox Church has suffered greatly with probably a larger percentage of martyrs for the Holy Faith.

While it's true that the patriarchs of the East began inching towards the boundary of communion with Rome as early as that, the fact remains that until 1054, when schism officially took place, there was one Faith. And it is comments like these that make me realize how little some people actually do hope for a reunification of the Church under one Faith. Honestly, what good does it do to say "We have more martyrs than they do"? Re-evaluate your approach, as it only seems to widen the gap between us.

Factually post schism, more Catholics have been martyred in this day than in any other time. We have both suffered persecutions before and after the schism; there is no need to try to say who suffered a greater loss. Even Protestants have martyrs for their faith. Just be glad that you have Orthodoxy and we have Catholicism and they have their Christian beliefs because of them.

Is this comment necessary in TAW?

I'm now not sure that we can say that there was 'one faith' up until 1054, because the Nicene Creed controversey had already been going about 400 years, thus the western Churches were already on the way to schism.

On the other side of the official split in 1054, it took some time for the schism to spread throughout the lands. In some ways, the line is ony clearly drawn in history books.

I think the date, 1054 is just good for history books, because it's a more concise answer than to say that the Western Churches had been drifiting away from Orthodoxy for some time.

St. Augustine, it is said, took a more legalistic view on matters than most Orthodox.

On a totally different matter - the Smilies to the right of these posts; does anyone know what 'Kawaii' is?

"Kawaii" is the Japanese word for "cute" (IIRC). It refers to the Japanese style of animation ("anime") which includes distinctive facial features, especially the eyes. The Kawaii smilie is meant to imitate those features, hence: ^_^

In ASCII it looks like this: ^-^ It is used just like a regular smilie but also indicates a predilection for anime on the part of the poster.
