I've been in a controvertial mood these past few days, so here goes a potentially difficult topic.

I heard recently that women are responsible for 70% of divorces. Is divorce something that is contrary to the Christian message? Do women have too high expectations of marriage? Are we men unwise to get married in the present climate?

Let the controversy begin... ;)

I thought it was nearer 80%.

Personally, I think that a lot of women have a very rose-tinted view of marriage and personally I can't imagine myself ever getting married. Men have a lot to blame here, could be that my generation of males is a bunch of boys brought up by feminists.. :(

My Parents don tlive together. My dad is an absolute something I cannot say becouse I refuse to swear or use profane language. He moved out the week before their 20th anniverseriy, and lives with a woman who is on the vestry at her parish, and he never went to church before now, except at my confirmation and my brotrhers' baptism.

Jesus is pretty clearly against divorce of any kind. Luke attests to that. The exit clause about "except in cases of adultery" that we find in Matthew's version of the story is likely an addition. I still struggle with that personally because I do think there are times that marriage does not work out. I think divorce is a bad thing but sometimes bad things become necessary things. But in modern American society we take marriage way too lightly, that's for sure.

Any way, I don't know how good of an idea it is for us good Anglicans to be pontificating too much on divorce, considering we trace our tradition through the church of Henry the 8th. ;)

Marriage is an earthly type of our relationship with God. The church is the bride of Christ, and the church is in blood covenant with God. Marriage is also a covenant, and we should take it as seriously as we do our covenant relationship with God. If people thought breaking up their marriage was as serious as breaking up their relationship with God, there would be a lot more respect for the marriage covenant.
