Explaining the different baptism messages in the gospels
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. NKJV
Make disciples then baptize them. This seems to indicate that one can be a disciple without being baptized.
Mark 16:14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." NKJV
He who believes and baptized is saved. Except for the poison the deeds describe most of Paul's miracles. Therefore, this describes the believers of the Church
under the apostles. Peter was the leading steward in God's kingdom. It was his responsibility to ensure that every new believer was to be baptized as prescribed. Every believer that was baptized by an apostles would receive manifest gifts. 1 Corinthians 1: 6 the manifest gifts were given for 2 reasons. One reason was to
ensure every church had everything needed for the church to thrive as a doctrinally correct body of Christ. The second reason is to confirm that the person
was a true believer. Galatians 2:4 this was needed to make sure the Jews did not infiltrate and hijack the church. Both these reasons is why Peter and John were
sent to the Samaritans converted by Philip. Peter also went to the Church at Corinth to ensure it was a true Church. By 1Corinthians 9: 5 we know that all the
apostles traveled to the churches to ensure the mandate in Matthew 28:19 was followed. After the churches had been given a good foundation the manifest gifts were not needed.
Luke 24:46 Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high." NKJV
Luke did not get to baptism until he wrote acts. We will discuss that after John's witness of the events after Jesus was resurrected.
John 20:19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you." 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." NKJV
Jesus gives the Holy Spirit, indwelling of the Spirit's of the Father and Jesus, to the disciples on the day He was resurrected. Genesis 2:7 God breathed life into Adam when He became a living being. This time Jesus caused them to be born from above with an eternal spirit. Until this time Jesus could not cause believers to be born of the Spirit. John is the only one to document this event. Most Christians seem to overlook this giving of the Holy Spirit. John's account is supported by other scripture.
Acts 1:4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 And He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." NKJV
Luke cited John the Baptist's prophecy that Jesus would baptize the disciples with fire.
Acts 1:1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. NKJV
However in verse 2 Luke writes that Jesus gave commandments through the Holy Spirit and also presented Himself alive. The teaching through the Holy Spirit confirms John's account of Jesus giving the Holy Spirit when He breathed on them. This is how Jesus teaches us today.
After Jesus had caused His disciples to be born again by John's account, without the Holy Spirit coming upon them. Acts 1:8 He told all His disciples to gather in Jerusalem to wait for power when the Holy Spirit had come upon them.
Is there a second witness to support John's account in Chapter 20 verse22.
The first scriptures to be considered.
Acts 18:24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. NKJV
The Holy Spirit speaks very highly of Apollos even though he only knew the baptism of John. We know that Paul did meet Apollos later, and called him a brother, with no mention of Apollos needing baptism. If Apollos taught accurately the things of the Lord he was either taught by the Holy Spirit when Jesus breathed on the Apostles He had chosen as in the gospel of John, or by an unnamed believer. Was Apollos an apostle? Verse 25 states that he had been instructed in the way of the lord but does not indicate who had instructed him. He certainly felt the need to proclaim the gospel.
Acts 19:1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all. NKJV
We are not told just how Paul discovered that they were disciples. Paul probably had the gift of Spiritual discernment meaning He knew if a person had the Spirit of God in them. Verse 2 Paul did know that they believed in Jesus. Ephesians 1:13 we receive the Spirit when we believe. If one of the 120 apostles at Pentecost or a believer, who was baptized after Pentecost, had made them disciples they should have heard of the Holy Spirit being given and whoever gave them the gospel should have baptized them in the name of the Lord Jesus just as Philip had done to the Samaritans.
Paul did not give the 12 the gospel message or teach them about Jesus, all he did is baptize them in Jesus' name and when he laid his hands on them they received power from on high. Therefore the Spirit came upon them, not from the water baptism, but by the laying on of Paul's hands. They were in the same spiritual condition as the disciples in the upper room at Pentecost. They were true disciples prior to baptism in Jesus' name. They must have been some of the apostles Jesus had chosen and breathed on after His resurrection.
John 21:11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast." Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?" — knowing that it was the Lord. NKJV
God does not normally give His children useless information. I believe there were 153 people Jesus breathed on when He was resurrected. I believe that Jesus still breathes on people today at their conversion.
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
