Dish vs Cable

I am getting REALLY tired of my cable company and am looking at Dish Network. Anyone have any opinions- good or bad re Dish. Am I cutting off my nose to spite my face? Should I just suck it up and pay the next rate hike and keep quiet about losing HBO? Should I upgrade to Digital with the cable (even though they won't give me the price break because we already have the basic service and aren't "new" customers? TELL ME WHAT TO DO?!?!?

Go with digital cable; especially if you have more than one TV, and more than one member in your household.

I feel the same way. We lost one of the local channels this year on cable and dish offers all three locals. I only stay with cable because of the cable internet.

Cable internet is another good reason to go with digital cable.

There are definitely things about cable that stink, but one very important thing to consider is that if something goes wrong with cable, *they* have to fix it, if something goes wrong with dish, its *your* resposibility.

I have had both and I would go with the cable. I know what you mean about not getting the price break because you are not a new customer. That stinks. Cable they have to fix if something goes wrong that's a plus. I don't know what your weather is like but when we had dish we could not get reception when it snowed or rained hard or the wind blew hard plus if the dish gets moved you have to reset it (not fun). No weather problems with cable. I have cable now and it costs a little more but its worth it and I soon will be getting the internet hookup through them because I hear it is great.

I have to go with a cable internet and digital cable tv combination package. Plus I really like haveing wires to deal with. Makes one feal like they are in control.

I had dish network backin the states and thney are very difficult to deal with. I had to have it (I was inthe country) if I wanted any channels.

They are fine on installation but if you need to disconnect...they make you climb on your own roof and take down the equiptment and mail it to them. Suddenly nothing is "their problem". They gave me alot of headaches. They call you to sign you up for bigger packages and when you say no they do it anyway and charge you. (happened twice) Then when you didn't notice you had those channels (because you didn't think they were in your package...because you told them "NO") they don't want to refund your money...because you have had those channels for several weeks.

I think they are unethical, but that is just me.

I've had DirecTV for years and years and have never had a single problem with it apart from momentary signal loss once every few months or so. They just keep adding channels too.

Oh, and I own my own equipment and have never had billing problems for service. If you buy the equipment from them I think it's pretty cheap, like $30 for the set-top box, little more for the dish and they install it for free. You are not required to buy from them of course, I bought high=end equipment elsewhere. No, no climbing on your roof to take it down. I've heard bad stories about Dish Network though.

I had DirecTV for 2 years, then I moved into my fraternity's house and here they have cable. I must say that DirecTV (satelite) is much better.

+many many more channels
+many more Christian channels
+more limited interest channels
+easy to navigate menus and movies to order on demand. Easier than cable
+MUCH cheaper in cost

only one disadvantage
- they have to come to your house to install the dish and you have to pay them to do it only once.

We had Dish for two years, loved the reception. We had it in two rooms, plus we were able to split the signal off one of those televisions (the tech showed us how) and put it on our basement television as well. Of course you had to go upstairs to change the channel, but there are cheap ways around that, too.

Then we moved--too many trees here for Dish, so we're on digital cable. The signal is not as good--fuzzy--and not strong enough to split to our basement. They say Direct TV has a lower satellite that might work for our new house. We're going to check into it. but we'll have to keep some form of cable for internet purposes. Can't imagine going back to phone lines.

I work for a cable tv company and you would not believe how many people who cancel their cable to go to Direct tv or dish eventually end up coming back to cable. I have seen it happen lots of times!
I personally have only had cable and it does have its faults (not the same company I work for ) but the people I know who have Direct tv have had a lot more problems than I have and they pay more.

AND Dish and Direct both make you sign contracts for at least a year and if you wish to cancel before the end of the year (we moved out of the country) you have to pay for the remainder of your contract. (kind of like cell phone companies do)

I don't have now, or didn't have a contract when I subscribed to Direc TV.
They do do that for boxes now but it's because people buy them and turn them into black boxes (free service) for resell.

hmm, okay I may be mistaken about Direct TV. But I know FOR a FACT that I had to with Dish network. My parents have Direct TV and I thought it was like that with them too. It most certainly is with Dish Network, though....

I've had both and would have to recommend digital cable over Dish. We had too many problems with the Dish. Everything from losing two local channels due to disputes between the Dish company and the local networks to losing the signal every time a cloud blew over the house.

I absolutely love my Direct tv. I had cable before and everytime there was a storm my cable would go out, and I'm not talking out for a few minutes, but usually most of the day it would either not work or the picture and sound would be messed up. It also took them forever to fix the problem when I would call and report the problem. I've been with direct tv for about 3years now and have never had serious problems with them. My satelite has never, never, never been out for long periods of time. When a storm does come through it may go out for a minute or two to search for a signal, but it comes right back on with a perfect picture every time!

Well, the beauty about Sky Angel Christan & family-friendly satellite is because it is only $12 bucks a month, you can have either cable, digital cable or another satellite service and still get lots of great Christian TV and radio channels. Come on, I can't believe that after 9 years Sky Angel has been around, it doesn't make it on a Chrstiain forum about digital cable or satellite! Sky just added Fox News, Hallmark, Hallmark Movie channel and soon HGTV to go along with their Christian channels, so, now it's really a rounded service. Let's get talking about services brought to the Christian community by Christians!
