  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sorry but I didn't want to hijack that thread!!!

I just have to voice my opinion. Not to make anybody made, but.....

I don't understand how clapping and "guitars in church" is discraceful? I have played the guitar for 23 years. AND have spent at least 15 of those years playing at every Sunday mass. I have experience the true feeling of the holy spirit. And watched others cry and laugh as a result of that music.

Even the Holy Father himself was clapping and smiling when at the Papal Youth Rally we sang a christian rock song for him. I understand that there are different strokes for different folks... But how is it discraceful?

AT our church we solved that problem by having different types of music at each mass. Early mass is organ, then guitar/youth mass, etc..... People know which one to go to depending on their style...

Again I mean NO disrespect, but that really hit home since I'm usually THE one leading the prayer with guitar and clapping!

Bless you!

I had to go take the kids to the bus. First day of school! YEAH!! I was typing so fast that I forgot...

I wanted to ask, is this the precident(sp?) Do most people not like the guitars and clapping? Do you prefer the "classics"?

Personally, I love it all! I just want to lift my voice in praise and share the unity of the church as we are all singing......

Any thoughts?

Was this during a Mass, though? Part of the liturgy?

I somehow can't envsion the Pope clapping along during a Mass.

No not during mass! LOL!! As he was coming in, and also during a prayer... It WAS quite a sight!!
Coming in from where? It wasn't at a Mass at all was it?
Are you saying that JPII has an issue with new music during the mass, or just that he wouldn't clap along?

Just curious!
I don't think that he would, no. Not during a Mass. :)

I personally think that any instrument, from organ to kazoo when it is used to reverently make music to glorify the Lord can be used during mass. I myself, prefer guitar above organ greately. I think it depends on the 'kind' of music.
Modern music in itsself is not a problem: anything goes modern music that has no relevance to the liturgy is.

As the pope was entering the stadium... It was a RALLY. And the mass was later....

I don't know Michelle, in his younger days....... ;)

He used to work with the youth, doncha know?!
My opinion is that rock music does not belong in the liturgy. That is my opinion. I don't know how the Pope feels about it. But I cannot see him clapping along and tapping his foot and bouncing his head during the liturgy.

If it's not during the Mass, it's something altogether different and I see nothing wrong with it.

Yep, it's the fact that the Mass is a Sacrifice--not just a Celebration and not just a Meal. (Can you imagine people clapping and whooping it up as Jesus hung on the cross? I mean Jesus' FRIENDS and COMRADS--not His persecutors, I imagine that Jesus' persecutors would have been overjoyed and were truly celebrating.)

Chant still has "pride of place". And the organ is supposed to be played more and more.

You know it's funny. Before the "Silly Seventies", there WEREN'T guitars at Mass--there was organ music. Then we'd have separate "folk Masses" for the folks that wanted those. Then they sort of "crept" into ALL the Masses (along with drums, bongos, et. al.) Nice experiment. Went well with the "clown Masses", the "dancing in the aisles", and the "chips and dip" attitude. Well, the Mass is NOT entertainment. Now the Pope wants us to return to what we had. At a rally, in a stadium, after Mass(or before Mass), clapping and all may be appropriate, but not AT Mass.

The organ however wasn't around at the time of the first Christians. It's historically grown and added more then a millenium later. IF an organ can be 'added' why would not other instruments, provided indeed they're played reverently and are used to glorify or emphasise, be wrong in themselves?

Nothing wrong with different instruments being used. It's the clapping and 'rocking out' as though it were a pep rally at Mass that I can't stomach.

I'm sorry but I can't.

So you are against singing "Shout through the heart and you're to blame?" when singing to Jesus? ^_^

Not even tapping his foot under all those robes so no one can see him? ;)

Even Amazing Grace is beautiful with a few bongos!!! :D

I totally agree with the idea of reverence during mass. But I also feel that as an exit song... It's totally appropriate! As everyone is leaving church, they definately should REJOICE and SHOUT about the Holy Spirit!!! It always leaves me with a great feeling when leaving church...... Just my opinion!
