  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm in my 5th year of university this coming year doing actuarial studies + statistics. I was originally doing actuarial studies + finance and working part time at a financial institution. But after a while, I realised that I didn't have enjoy working in a field where I wasn't helping people/society. So I switched to actuarial studies + statistics in hope that I can find health related statistical work since its still related to my studies but I don't know if I'll enjoy it .

I've thought about doing post graduate studies in dentistry or pharmacy. But my only concern for this is that I've never been a people person. My friends would describe me as quiet and unemotional but very nice. I would really want to work in an area that is helping society or people but still don't know where my direction lies.

I've been praying and reading about it and I know that I want to work in an area that I will enjoy, have passion and interest in. Sounds silly but I don't really know my passion or interests.

Any ideas on how to deal with this? On finding my passion?

It isn't so much about what we DO want as it is about what we do NOT want.

I made a very drastic change in my career goals this summer. Since I was 5 all I wanted to do was have a career as a pilot. Only problem is I hate flying in straight lines for more than a few minutes at a time, and I would rather do something that has a greater impact on peoples lives. So I made two decisions. The first was to go into teaching (working in a middle school now as a educational assistant) and fly aerobatics on the side. My life is finally at ease and everything is perfect.

As a result of several terrible jobs in aviation the lesson I learned was what I did NOT want to do. And it changed my life forever.

Boss_BlueAngels: Thanks for the words. It was only after entering uni, I begun contemplating about going into the health field but never acted upon it. I wanted to make a positive contribution to people's lives, but kind of hesitant because of my introvert character. Not enough confidence I guess. I know I DO NOT want to work in corporate. I changed into statistics to get into health statistics / biostatistics which would be sort of health related and related to my studies. But only concerns are the pay and whether I'll actually enjoy it since I'd really want a practical component to my job. Sounds very materialistic, but I know and have heard from a friend that the field isn't recognised so the pay isn't too good.
