Of course dinosaurs were real! I had a bit of a problem with this before I was a christian, because I like dinosaurs too much to not believe they existed. I spent far too much time as a child watching The Land Before Time...:D..... I've got a couple of links if you're interested...

Basically, dinosaurs do feature in the Bible, but under different names, because the word 'dinosaur' wasn't invented at the time and dinosaurs have been named by the people who have discovered them. So they're generally translated as dragons or reptiles. After the flood the Earth was a completely different place, and the dinosaurs couldn't survive in the new environment and they died out. :(

Yes, quite right there, ditizi. I know people who get quite bent out of shape if you try to argue this - they are what's known as 'creationists' which means that they believe quite literally that the earth was created from day 1 - Sunday - to day 6 - Friday - and that God rested on day 7 - Saturday. Hence the Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest which we have converted to Sunday. They say this is confirmed by the words "And there was evening, and there was morning" after each 'day's' work. But then, speaking from their viewpoint as simple herdsmen, they would say that, wouldn't they? To them it would be only logical.

But many have no problem with their existence - after all, how to you explain away the thousands and thousands of fossilised skeletons that have been found? For myself, as you can tell, I have no problem with it at all and think that Genesis chapter 1 gives plenty of space for dinosaurs to have been around

20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. 24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
Also, God's days are not like one of our days. In 2 Peter 3:8, it says "with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day". So figure that out!

Personally, I think the miracle of Genesis is not whether it was literally true but the fact that these unscientific, ignorant nomads actually got the sequence of events correct. To me that makes Genesis 1 very, very awesome!

Time is a human creation which we have over-extended to God. As flaglady correctly pointed out, 2 Peter raises questions about how long a 'day' for God is. Just because it's 24 hours for us, doesn't mean that it's the same for God. So, I see no problem in dinosaurs being around on the 5th 'day' (hebrew "yom", which can translate as both a 24 hour period or an unspecified passage of time), but already having been wiped out by the time Adam was created on the 6th 'day'.

There were many stories of unexplained beasts through the ages, too -- stories that were not always believed. Descriptions of similar animals popped up in diverse civilizations as late as the 1800's... even now.

Many of the contemporary sightings were marine animals, so their bones would be underwater. I would guess that the ferocious ones mentioned in Medieval tales would have been burned.

There is a description in the biblical book of Job of a creature called "behemoth" that couldn't be anything other than a dinasaur, and there is also a description (somewhere :) ) of a fire-breathing sea creature called leviathan.

Yes, dinasaurs existed, and they were even with humans on earth.

Yes, they did exist, and walked with man. If you can get your hands on a DVD "Dinosaurs and the Bible" by Kent Hovind, he explains it very well, or you can go to his website www.drdino.com. He taught science for 15 years and has been in the ministry 16 years. He has answers you are looking for.

God bless you for seeking

I was given a copy of some of DrDino's speaking events, and they are very... interesting.

His points on the possible physical conditions of the atmosphere before the Flood, and it's resulting effects on plant and animal growth and life-span are thought-provoking.

I believe some think the Behemoth is a Hippo, but I am unsure. In regards to Leviathan, I cannot possibly imagine what it might have been, but essentially yes they were real, of course. We cannot deny the bones and fossils we find of them. :)

Digit

People say hippos or elephants, but it' s described as having a tail like a tree, and hippos and elephants have little scrawny tails.

That isn't a reference to the hippos tail. It's a euphemism for the Hippo's genitals. Dinosaurs were quite real, but never walked the Earth with humans.
