What is the difference between the primay, logical, or extended partition? Or maybe I should rephrase it. What would I need a logical or extended partition in DOS for? What is a logical or extended partition?

Actually you can fix it, just run Fdisk again and create logical partitions.....I do it all the time....camphlps said:uhhh....let me explain it in this way so that you dont run into any problems
Primary is primay (c
Extended is how much of the hard drive will be used for other partitions
Logical additional drives (d:, e:, f
Things to consider, if you want only one partition all you need is primary...
If you want more than one, one LARGE WARNING...Extended is not a drive but a reserve space for logical. So if you create an extended it'll require logical partitions. if you only make a primary and extended without any logical, you in trouble. no way you can fix it, with the exception of third party software. And that is a pain
On the NTFS thing, Actually you can create the partitions using FDISK and then using windows NT/2000/XP you can then format them as NTFS......but it's actually easier to use Windows 2000/XP to create the partitions because you can do it within windows if it's not the boot partition....marduke said:yep what doofus said, i have done it many times. fdisk is a wonderful program, shame it cant make NTFS partitions...
you are right about that, what I'm talking about though is either a new drive or a plain fat/fat32 drive being partitioned and then being formated as NTFS.....when you use Fdisk on an existing NTFS drive it will give you a hard time sometimes.....camphlps said:look doofus, you may not have done what i had a customer give me. when you go to add logical it says no extended is available and if you try to delete partitions it says you must delete logical first, but there isnt any....and this is all in fdisk

hmmm, I think I'll have to look through my discs and see if I can find that....merryheart said:you can use delpart for that if you can find a copy. It used to ship with one of the NT versions in the admin tools... (3.5 I think)
