  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Discernment is really good but discerning of spirits is better and different.

The manifestation of spiritual gifts
"to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

"another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:" (I Cor 12:10).

All of these come from the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, it's our opinions.

My understanding is that the gift of discerning of spirits is needed for an immature church or Christian. Many think of discernment as natural skill. But mature Christians have "trained their senses to discern good and evil" (Heb. 5:14). This requires spiritual mindedness which is beyond natural understanding (1 Cor. 2:13). A mature Christian uses the word of God as a basis for his opinion, therefore, it isn't just "his opinion." So then, although the gift of discerning of spirits is a miraculous gift and is sometimes necessary, the mature discerning of good and evil still requires supernatural (spiritual) understanding which only comes from God. Therefore, they are related in a sense.

Agree that we need to train our senses and know The Word plus our opinions need to line up with His Word.

From my perspective, discerning of spirits is for believers who can listen to the Holy Spirit and obey which usually takes maturity.

"These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation." This truth was stated about Paul and Silas. What could be wrong with that? After she followed them many days saying this, Paul commanded, in the name of Jesus, for the evil spirit of divination to leave her and it did the same hour. (Acts 16). In spite of the truth being stated, The Holy Spirit knew her motivation.

'...Peter said to him, “Ananias, why did you let Satan fill your heart and make you think you could lie to the Holy Spirit? You only pretended to give it all, yet you hid back part of the proceeds from the sale of your property to keep for yourselves." How did Peter know? God revealed their secret to Peter Acts 5

"When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said, “Now here comes a true son of Israel—an honest man with no hidden motive!” Nathanael was stunned and said, “But you’ve never met me—how do you know anything about me?” (John 1) We may think ...but that was Jesus. However, he had set aside his deity while on earth in ministry.

Just wondering;

Why it happened many days before Paul took care of the situation.. (I know God's timing - just curious). Acts 16

Why the distinction of lying to the Holy Spirit in Acts 5?

How quickly Nathaniel changed his mind about Jesus because he had just said Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth. But when Jesus knew him, he was intrigued.Joh 1
Plus Jesus gave a word of knowledge.
