  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am currently looking at Anglicanism but thought I might look into Presbyterianism as well. I want to know what the major differences are between Presbyterianism in theology, practice and governance in relation to Anglicanism?

I see that you're in Australia. Mainstream Presbyterianism in Australia is quite conservative (much like the PCA in America). This is because all the non-conservative Presbyterians joined the Uniting Church.

Australia also has a few small ultra-conservative Presbyterian groups, like the Presbyterian Church of Eastern Australia, the Presbyterian Reformed Church, and the Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Anglicanism in Australia runs a spectrum from conservative Sydney (who are very much like Presbyterians with bishops) to high-church and liberal groups elsewhere.

In your city of Melbourne, Presbyterians share a conservative theology, and a governance structure based on local groups of elders, churches grouped into presbyteries, and state and national assemblies. See this Wikipedia article for details.

Worship styles differ across the city, from the more formal/traditional service at Scots' Church in the CBD to more contemporary/family services in the suburbs.

Presbyterian pastors in Melbourne are trained at the Presbyterian Theological College in Box Hill.

Theological differences from Melbourne Anglicans include a different view of the sacraments, a stronger emphasis on sin and repentance, a more Calvinist theology, and not ordaining women.

Thank you very much. The Presbyterian Church of Australia looks great ! I'll take a look. Are you from Australia?
