A fiery hell does not exist-Would a loving, merciful God ever contemplate it? ...may that never be thought to happen!
What happens at death?
I think that the biblical position all along, from righteous Job, to David, the prophets, and Christ, is that when a person dies, so do his thoughts...he ceases to exist-that is what the everlasting death actually means.
This is proven by the Bible:
Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, we read: "The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they have any wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. All that your hands finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom is Sheol, the place to which you are going."
Thus, the position of the Bible is very clear: The dead are unconscious, as if in a very deep sleep.

Forgive my limited Bible knowledge, but wasn't Sheol the place where the dead before Christ went, and then Christ decended there before his coming to earth to take the righteous? And what of what the Bible clearly states as a Lake of Fire?

This topic is very interesting to me. Here are a few of my thoughts:
first lets look at what happened to Jonah. Jonah way swallowed by a big fish and stayed there for three days. This was done as a SIGN of the Christ to come, which was fulfilled in Jesus. This how Jonah described it:
Jonah 2:2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
I believe that this is not only a history of what happened to Jonah by a prophecy of Jesus. One of the interesting things about this verse is that Jonah described being in the fish as 'the belly of hell', this word hell is actually Sheol, which is THE GRAVE (the unseen and unperceptable). But was Jonah actually dead? Nope, but it was very dark and lonely place down there, trust me. The type and shadow here is that Christ was also ALONE when he bore the sins of the whole world. The big question for me was, when did he begin this Atonement? Was it only from his death to his resurrection? No matter how you count the days, Jesus was NOT DEAD FOR THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS. The scriptures are not in error, God knows how to count. Did you know that there is no verse which says that Jesus was DEAD for three days and three night? Now this statement may shock you into a knee jerk reaction, but it's true. The phrase that is used to describe this three days and three nights is "the heart of the earth"
Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Think about it. If the idea of roasting people in a fire had never come up into Gods heart, would he ever, ever, create a fiery hell? Never may that be said to have occurred!

What Really Is Hell?
WHATEVER image the word "hell" brings to your mind, hell is generally thought of as a place of punishment for sin. Concerning sin and its effect, the Bible says: "Through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned." (Romans 5:12) The Scriptures also state: "The wages sin pays is death." (Romans 6:23) Since the punishment for sin is death, the fundamental question in determining the true nature of hell is: What happens to us when we die?
Does life of some kind, in some form, continue after death? What is hell, and what kind of people go there? Is there any hope for those in hell? The Bible gives truthful and satisfying answers to these questions.
Life After Death?
Does something inside us, like a soul or a spirit, survive the death of the body? Consider how the first man, Adam, came to have life. The Bible states: "Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life." (Genesis 2:7) Though breathing sustained his life, putting "the breath of life" into his nostrils involved much more than simply blowing air into his lungs. It meant that God put into Adam's lifeless body the spark of life"the force of life," which is active in all earthly creatures. (Genesis 6:17; 7:22) The Bible refers to this animating force as "spirit." (James 2:26) That spirit can be compared to the electric current that activates a machine or an appliance and enables it to perform its function. Just as the current never takes on the features of the equipment it activates, the life-force does not take on any of the characteristics of the creatures it animates. It has no personality and no thinking ability.
What happens to the spirit when a person dies? Psalm 146:4 says: "His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish." When a person dies, his impersonal spirit does not go on existing in another realm as a spirit creature. It "returns to the true God who gave it." (Ecclesiastes 12:7) This means that any hope of future life for that person now rests entirely with God.
The ancient Greek philosophers Socrates and Plato held that a soul inside a person survives death and never dies. What does the Bible teach about the soul? Adam "came to be a living soul," says Genesis 2:7. He did not receive a soul; he was a soula whole person. The Scriptures speak of a soul's doing work, craving food, being kidnapped, experiencing sleeplessness, and so forth. (Leviticus 23:30; Deuteronomy 12:20; 24:7; Psalm 119:28) Yes, man himself is a soul. When a person dies, that soul dies.Ezekiel 18:4.
What, then, is the condition of the dead? When pronouncing sentence upon Adam, Jehovah stated: "Dust you are and to dust you will return." (Genesis 3:19) Where was Adam before God formed him from the dust of the ground and gave him life? Why, he simply did not exist! When he died, Adam returned to that state of complete absence of life. The condition of the dead is made clear at Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, where we read: "The dead know nothing . . . The dead have no awareness, no feelings, no thoughts.
Unending Torment or Common Grave?
Since the dead have no conscious existence, hell cannot be a fiery place of torment where the wicked suffer after death. What, then, is hell? Examining what happened to Jesus after he died helps to answer that question. The Bible writer Luke recounts: "Neither was [Jesus] forsaken in Hades [hell, King James Version] nor did his flesh see corruption."* (Acts 2:31) Where was the hell to which even Jesus went? The apostle Paul wrote: "I handed on to you . . . that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, yes, that he has been raised up the third day according to the Scriptures." (1 Corinthians 15:3, 4) So Jesus was in hell, the grave, but he was not abandoned there, for he was raised up, or resurrected.
Consider also the case of the righteous man Job, who suffered much. Wishing to escape his plight, he pleaded: "Who will grant me this, that thou mayest protect me in hell [Sheol], and hide me till thy wrath pass?"# (Job 14:13, Douay Version) How unreasonable to think that Job desired to go to a fiery-hot place for protection! To Job, "hell" was simply the grave, where his suffering would end. The Bible hell, then, is the common grave of mankind where good people as well as bad ones go.
HellfireAll-Consuming?
Could it be that the fire of hell is symbolic of all-consuming, or thorough, destruction? Separating fire from Hades, or hell, the Scriptures say: "Death and Hades were hurled into the lake of fire." "The lake" mentioned here is symbolic, since death and hell (Hades) that are thrown into it cannot literally be burned. "This [lake of fire] means the second death"death from which there is no hope of coming back to life.Revelation 20:14.
The lake of fire has a meaning similar to that of "the fiery Gehenna [hell fire, King James Version]" that Jesus spoke of. (Matthew 5:22; Mark 9:47, 48) Gehenna occurs 12 times in the Christian Greek Scriptures, and it refers to the valley of Hinnom, outside the walls of Jerusalem. When Jesus was on earth, this valley was used as a garbage dump, "where the dead bodies of criminals, and the carcasses of animals, and every other kind of filth was cast." (Smith's Dictionary of the Bible) The fires were kept burning by adding sulfur to burn up the refuse. Jesus used that valley as a proper symbol of everlasting destruction.
As does Gehenna, the lake of fire symbolizes eternal destruction. Death and Hades are "hurled into" it in that they will be done away with when mankind is freed from sin and the condemnation of death. Willful, unrepentant sinners will also have their "portion" in that lake. (Revelation 21:8) They too will be annihilated forever. On the other hand, those in God's memory who are in hellthe common grave of mankindhave a marvelous future.

Revelation 20:13 states: "The sea gave up those dead in it, and death and Hades gave up those dead in them." Yes, the Bible hell will be emptied. As Jesus promised, "the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear [Jesus'] voice and come out." (John 5:28, 29) Although no longer presently existing in any form, millions of dead ones who are in Jehovah God's memory will be resurrected, or brought back to life, in a restored earthly paradise.Luke 23:43; Acts 24:15.
In the new world of God's making, resurrected humans who comply with his righteous laws will never need to die again. (Isaiah 25:8) Jehovah "will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore." In fact, "the former things [will] have passed away." (Revelation 21:4) What a blessing is in store for those in hell"the memorial tombs"! This blessing indeed is reason enough for us to take in more knowledge of Jehovah God and his Son, Jesus Christ.John 17:3.

If there is no "fiery hell", then why is it in the scriptures in the book of Revelation? "The lake which burneth of fire and brimstone" or something. Maybe your just in that place, but not consciense? *confuzzled*

Yes, Jesus descended to Hell and overpowered Satan then ascended to His father where He symbolically applied His blood to the mercy seat and set free those who had faith before His death and were held captive in Paradise, thus leading captivity captive. So, Jesus spent at least a portion of those three days in hell, although it is likely not very long, as we see that He said to the thief on the cross beside Him, "today you will be with Me in Paradise."

Heaven and Hell, are more like a black and white intertwined/plaited rope, than polar opposites.
You can die every day. die to yuor thoughts. Death of thought - which is HEAVEN.
You are in HELL when you area a slave to your thoughts and emotions, Pride, Gluttony, Greed, etc etc etc.
I know becuase I've been there! And I FEEL it.

Jesus' second name was not Christ.
We can all access the Christ within us.
Therefore Jesus Christ represents that divine 'spark' within us that we can all access.
So, whenever anyone else sinned against Jesus - These are his human experiences. But he FORGAVE, TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK, he treated others as he would like to be treated. Because he was "in touch with" (to say the least) - the Holy Spirit and God. As a man, he was hurt, felt betrayed, he felt sorrow. He got angry at times, he felt happy at other times but he never gave in to these emotions, and used them to sin.
Satan/the deveil tempted him with these emotions, and he prayed for God to give him the strength to fight the Devil. The Devil tried to test him- but he never GAVE IN to the Devil. Because, although jesus was a man, he was also the Son of God.
he came with that knowledge. "You don't know what I know". he said.
And so, he took on all the sins of the people, and said, "Forgive them Father for they know not what they do".
And he died as a man, and was raised to eternal life with God, throught he Holy Spirit - thus showing us, that if we BELIEVE in all he had to say, if we follow him ,as the WAY THE TUTH and THE LIFE, we too can experience eternal life.
We, too are spirits, incarnate to experience this experience so to speak.
WE ARE NOT HUMAN BEINGS HAVING A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE, WE ARE SPIRITUAL BEINGS HAVING A HUMAN EXPERIENCE. !!!!!!

So I don't think Jesus went to Hell, or sinned.

Well, I just talked to my pastor about this question, and if you think about what is written in the Bible you can easily come up with an answer. What did Christ say to the thief on the cross that believed? "Today you will be with me in heaven."
that clearly states that Christ, although he may have went to hell to declare victory over sin, did not stay there.

my camp counsuler said because he had all our sins he went to hell and "dropped them off". then on the thrid day over came death and overcame hell. this is like use. if we have jesus in our hearts then we can over come hell to. (or something like that.)PleaseHelpMe said:

PHM:Can''t say I didn't warn ya! LOL. Didn't I tell ya you'd run into these problems from not interpreting or understanding scripture, but just following along with some church doctrines! LOL A little tidbit for ya, most of these "thoughts" come from interpreting Luke 17 "Rich man and Lazarus" as truth, when in fact its a PARABLE (fable, story, analogy)! But sadly, the "fiery hell" fear factor brings people and money "fearfully" into the church pews and coffers, so they love it. Just pay attention and heed Goodnews and Raym, they're on track!
Oh yeah, don't let others dissuade you, your right on regarding the punctuation, Jesus didn't go to paradise on Friday, like He told Mary on Sunday: "don't cling to Me as I've not YET ascended." And remember what I said about common sense and logic--IF people were in this "hell" and judged, then what reason would Jesus have to "preach" to them about? And, if not "judged", then why would they be in this "hell"? Hmmmm? See, its not logical, not to mention its against the very nature, personality, and character of Christ, so keep reading with your thinking cap on, your doing good!

So did Jesus go to hell to suffer for our sins or was he there preaching an eternal life to the souls that did not witness His teachings on Earth? I am hearing sides say different things... I'm confused about where the souls before Jesus' coming went....butxifxnot said:

Yes, except that I'd prefer to say he 'descended' into hell. He experienced hell. Hell is a real place, but first and foremost it's separation from God. Jesus endured separation from God - that's why he cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"Mayerpod said:

Jesus went to hadyes( hadyes is where you go when you die, to wait for jugment day) in thoose three days he preached to the people that had drowned in the big flood. Also jesus defeated the devil on the cross, god is in charge of heven and hell, the devil is on earth and heaven( heaven is not a place where just good people go)PleaseHelpMe said:
