YLT is about the only version I can find that renders that greek word as "gehenna"Hell is NEVER mentioned in the Bible --- Sheol, Ghenna and Hades are but none of them are hell. Our modern concept of hell mostly derives from lurid medieval art and fiction. Dante's "Inferno" is the real source of most of how we think of hell.
Matt uses it 7 times, Mark 3, and 1 each in Luke and James[which is the only place outside of the Gospels it is used]. John, Peter,Paul and book of Acts never mention it, at least not the particular word],from what I can see...
Genesis 1:1 (YLT)
Strong's Number G1067 matches the Greek γέεννα (geenna),
which occurs 12 times in 12 verses in the Greek concordance
Matthew 23:15, 33 are the only 2 places that Jesus address an actual people concerning "gehenna":
Mat 23:
15
'Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.
33
'Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?
The other times He mentions the body in association with it's members, eye, foot, hand and tongue[i James]
Mat 5:
29 'But, if thy right eye doth cause thee to stumble, pluck it out....
and not thy whole body be cast to gehenna.
30
'And, if thy right hand doth cause thee to stumble, cut it off.......
Mat 10:28
'And be not afraid of those killing the body, and are not able to kill the soul,........uk
This parable in Luke 16 actually shows a man in hades being tormented by a flame:
Lazarus and the Rich Man - Here a little, there a little - Commentary
The parable of Lazarus and the rich man has been the foundation for many of the erroneous beliefs about "hell" within traditional Christianity.
Some have viewed it not as a parable, but as a true story Yeshua told to give details about the punishment of sinners in hell..........................
Luke 16:
22 "So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried."
23 "And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off,
and Lazarus in his bosom."
24 "Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham! have mercy on me! and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' "
Jas 3:6
and the tongue is a fire, the world of the unrighteousness, so the tongue is set in our members, which is spotting our whole body, and is setting on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by the gehenna.
Strong's Greek: 1067. γέεννα (geenna) -- Gehenna, a valley W. and South of Jer., also a symbolic name for the final place of punishment of the ungodly
Of Hebrew origin (gay' and Hinnom); valley of (the son of) Hinnom; ge-henna (or Ge-Hinnom), a valley of Jerusalem, used (figuratively) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment -- hell.
Gehenna, the name of a valley on the south and east of Jerusalem (yet apparently beginning on the Winer's Grammar, cf. Joshua 15:8; Pressel in Herzog, under the word),..............
The Jews so abhorred the place after these horrible sacrifices had been abolished by king Josiah (2 Kings 23:10), that they cast into it not only all manner of refuse, but even the dead bodies of animals and of unburied criminals who had been executed........
Jer 19:6
'Therefore, behold!, days are coming -- an affirmation of Jehovah --
and this place is not called any more, Tophet, and Valley of the son of Hinnom, but Valley of slaughter.
