Did I just commit the sin of materialism?

The other night, we had a small dog who ate some D-Con mouse poison. We knew she had to get to the emergency animal clinic ASAP, but my parents also knew that the cost of treatment (which ended up including office call, inducing vomitting, activated charcoal, and blood work) would likely exceed what they had. I offered to loan them the money I had, which was $112.00. That wasn't enough, but it got them to where mine plus what they had got the necessary treatment for the dog.

I am currently unemployed (hopefully not for long though), and the money I receive is SSI, or supplimental security income. Meaning I won't get any more (although if need be I can go to the credit union) until my May check arrives. So, I was talking to my mom earlier and asked her about paying me back what I had loaned. And then after the conversation ended (it was something that came up in a phone conversation, as she's out of town currently), I remembered something.

In the Bible God talks about how we're to give without expecting anything in return. Plus we have the parable about the rich guys who gave a lot of money to the church, but were not favored because they still had a lot left, but a poor woman gave ALL she had. Do you think she expected anything in return? I don't think so.

Have I just done something wrong or am I worked up over nothing?

You have paws-itively my vote for being the greatest person on this planet! You rose to the occasion of urgent need and gave sacrificially for the good. Yes, you should expect to receive your loan money returned as soon as it is possible. You are to be commended for your dear heart and I am certain God will reward you as well.

It's a high example we are given in scripture, as you said. If you can get by without the money, I wouldn't press repayment. If you have already mentioned it being a loan, then that isn't anyhting I haven't done, myself, and I know how you feel being on a fixed income. If your parents are poor, too, they may have a hard time making repayment, so guard your heart from bitterness if they don't repay. Just consider it a gift to the Lord and then wait upon Him to bless you in your own needs.

LUKE 6:31 If you love those who love you, what thanks can you expect? For even sinners do that Much. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what thanks can you expect? Even sinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount. INSTEAD ... love your enemies & do good, & lend without any hope of return.

Oh I'm not concerned that they can't or would have a hard time repaying. I'm not even implying that they wouldn't want to. I was just wondering if I oopsed when I mentioned it.

Thanks for the Luke verse though. I knew the Bible said somewhere not to expect back what you lend or something like that, I just wasn't sure where.
