Hi Hoghead,
The Bible makes no real "scientific" claims per say (whatever that means), it makes truth claims, yes, (i.e that a global flood happened and killed off all of sinful man kind and many of the creatures) In so far as a "geophysical witness" is concerned, scriptures claim is backed up by real science today and what we see in the field. The issue is exactly accepting or rejecting the Bible and what it says. Either a flood happened or it did not. Jesus understood that it happened, and that the "writings of Moses" were accurate, so, you are not really having a problem with
my interpretation but
Jesus's. (Considering science backs up Jesus, I don't see the problem.) My money is going to be on Jesus and the Bible and not man's interpretation. There is only one truth with regards to this issue. Either it happened or it did not. What exactly is the fundamentalism approach? Taking scripture at face value, taking into account all literary devices, is really the only valid position. Jesus seemed to think so.
Blessings

For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. 2 Peter 3:6
