The Lord was going to punish Cain for killing his brother, Able. Cain pleaded to the Lord, 'How can You punish me for killing if you had never told me that it was wrong to kill'. The Lord re-considered his decision and did not punish Cain. One could argue that God had learned from man.

This isn't what happened at all.

Genesis 4:3-16

3*And in process F26 of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4*And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock F27 and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5*But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6*And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7*If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted F28? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

8*And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9*And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? 10*And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood F29 crieth unto me from the ground. 11*And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; 12*When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13*And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14*Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 15*And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16*And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

Lillith sounds more like the first upstanding woman. Good for her for sticking up for herself. I was not aware of this myth being part of the Adam and Eve myth, but I like it. Thanks for informing us.

Thanks for filling me in. My memory was a bit hazy about the whole story.

First, I thought there were twelve tribes of Israel (one for each of Jacob's sons, except for two).

Secondly, I don't see how the number seven solves the problem of incest. Please explain your insight.
Where did I say that the number seven solves incest? Certain numbers are repeatedly used in the bible.

It begins with the authority. All things go back to this. This is where truth is. Since God is the authority, He can elect to establish things in a given way and then bring about new covenants and circumstances.

In the change of covenant, it no longer pleased God for us to use the Levitical (ceremonial) law, because these laws were fulfilled in Christ. Morals are absolutes, but God is the one who determines this. So, for a time it pleased him to use a single blood line fo all of mankind. Can you imagine if there had been a second blood line? THe judgment would get pretty messy.

Right, once there became enough people for incest to not be necessary, it displeased God for close siblings to get together.

It's like how for a certain time, parents allow kids to wear diapers, drink from bottles and other baby things, but once they get bigger, parents have different expectations of children, an 8 yr old is no longer allowed to wear diapers and drink from bottles! LOL!

When humanity was in it's "infant" stage, certain things were allowed, but once humanity had multiplied enough, it no longer pleased God or was allowed for people to have incest. :) It was no longer necesary, we had grown beyond the need for that.

Breastfeeding an infant is one thing, but breastfeeding an 8 yr old is a whole other issue! Big, HUGE difference! LOL! I would call that immoral, but perfectly fine with an infant.

Incest when there's only a handful of people on the planet is one thing, but incest when there's a billion people in the world is a whole other thing, totally unnecesary and immoral.
