God DID want them to take care of the Garden. Before the fall there were no diseases, so I don't see why He wouldn't have intended that they help fertilize it.

God gave the thumbs up for plant death!
And in the case of feces, I think that waste was just as others said, fertilizer. All part of the plan.

Maybe God assumed and planned that, before sin, there would be total assimilation of both the plant matter and the life of the plant. I.e., the plant never died, but was transformed into and merged with Adam and Eve's (and the animals') life. This is pure speculation, however, and I'm not saying I believe it.
