• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello all,

I just wanted to see how many have gone through a DBT class and how it helped you. I was diagnosed as Borderline in 2003 and went through a DBT group in 2005. It helped me realize that I have total control over my emotions and reactions to outside circumstances and that I don't have to over-react. My relationships are better now and I can keep a job plus school going. I hope to see some good responses.

I have never heard of DBT class. What is it and what was it like?

DBT is a class that helps teach you the skills necessary to cope with day to day problems and sudden problems in your life. It was created by Marsha Linehan and works off of spiritualness. The skills that I learned seem pretty basic but for us BPD sufferers these are huge tasks to learn. There is a lot of role playing and discussion about your feelings and emotions. Be prepared to dig deep into yourself for answers. I loved it.

I was told that I need to take it. I was hospitalized a few months ago for a suicide attempt. I was blessed enough to be admitted to the University of Washington Medical Center where Marsha created DBT. They kept on stressing that I should take the course but that it would take years of it. I'm going to school in the fall (hopefully) so I'm not going to start until I'm settled down somewhere. A lot of the treatment groups while I was in 7 North at UWMC, were based on Marsha's DBT... so I did learn some coping skills there.

I have mixed emotions about starting it though. I know the ill part of me is afraid to start treatment... I have panic attacks everytime I just go to talk to my therapist.

I started my therapy journey prior to the advent of DBT, at least I think I did. I only became aware of DBT about five years after my therapy began.

I have been blessed by a terrific therapist who has helped me with my BPD, and my other issues, as I am also alcoholic and eating disordered. With his help, and his cognitive behavioral therapy, I have made the radical changes necessary to get rid of the diagnosis altogether. I still struggle at times with some distorted thinking, but I am aware of it and can work through it.

I am so grateful for the research that has been done on cognitive therapy, as that is the root of where Marsha got the DBT concept from.

God bless.

I am very interested in DBT but the clinic I go to doesn't offer it. Does anyone know how I can find a DBT therapist?

If you cannot find a DBT therapist, I suggest you seek an experienced therapist who specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I have had great success with my therapy.
