  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Short answer, no.

Long answer, it depends on what exactly you would do with a desktop.

Given your desktop is so old, it would be trivial to find a device faster than it - my phone would be a good example. But there are other aspects of the desktop that are non-replicable on any other form factor - e.g. desktop real estate, proper speakers, using a proper mouse/keyboard, etc.

Given the question is so broad, I think a broad answer is appropriate. Any laptop you choose, provided it is large/small enough for your personal preference and it satisfies you on the conditions I noted above, will provide a much better computing experience than your current desktop. However, I would urge you to buy a laptop with an IPS display and an SSD. Trust me, it's worth it.

Can I buy a cheap laptop, under 400, that will work as a desktop? What are your recommendations for either a laptiop or a desktop? My old computer is using around 28 MB of space
Just keep watching the prices and every now and then a good deal comes along. I got a $300 sony lap top from the sony store. Now they are selling for around $500. I should have bought more of them at the time. Because I have lots of friends that would love to get a computer at that price. I got a good deal on my Sony all in one computer. I like Acer and Sony. I stay away from Dell. Stay away from people that just take a bunch of parts and throws them together. Get a company that makes a computer that all the parts are designed to work together.

Everyone should upgrade to a LED. They are a lot safer then the old CRT's.

At the end of Sept Mid Oct. many computer companies will be releasing updated versions of their laptops/desktops.

Seeing how your computer is 10 years old, I will assume that you will not need to do any heavy computing with it. So a laptop is perfect.

The brands I recommend are in order: Lenovo/apple tied for first, asus, sony, samsung.

the things you need to decide on are:
-size (screen size goes from 11-17 inches and laptops come in many different sizes)
-Operating system -windows/linux/OSX
-harddrive(hdd) space
-touch screen or non touch screen.

if u wait until sept/oct sales for older models will come up and then new ones will also be there if u prefer those.
also make sure if you get a new laptop you get ones will the intel haswell chips. better on battery and processing power.
there are more things but just pm me for a better more detailed explanation

oh wait. Last thing, you can set up a lcd screen ( you can buy one for under 200 additional some even have them packaged as a deal) and turn it into a desktop station. all laptops have ways of connecting to a second screen. then its just a matter of getting a usb keyboard and mouse and you got a desktop!
