Mr. Russell, the general director of the Sarasota Opera on Florida’s Gulf Coast, had expected his nonprofit organization to receive a state grant of about $70,000 once Mr. DeSantis signed a budget that state lawmakers had approved in March.

But in a move that stunned arts and culture organizations, Mr. DeSantis vetoed the entirety of their grant funding — about $32 million — on June 12, leaving them scrambling to figure out how to offset the shortfall.

DeSanctimonious strikes again. I do not like Trump, but his nickname for Ron is very fitting, as Ron wants to destroy Florida with his antics.

The vetoes are part of nearly $1 billion in line-item cuts that Desantis made before signing a $116.5 billion spending plan.

At a press conference in Tampa during which he signed the budget, DeSantis did not specifically explain why he slashed the state’s arts and culture grant programs. He did, however, mention a general desire to reduce spending and avoid funding items he deemed “inappropriate for state tax dollars.”

Margaret Murray, the chief executive of the Tampa-based arts non-profit Creative Pinellas, told the Times that small organizations, such as local music and theater groups, youth programs, and art festivals, will struggle the most to recover.

The veto was also criticized by leaders from the arts and advocacy organization the Florida Cultural Alliance, who called the move “unprecedented in the history of [Florida’s] grants program.

--

Stay tuned for a new Florida Ministry of Patriotic Art to pre-approve arts programs that align with government messaging.

Perhaps they should be privately funded. Seems like to me there are a lot of things that should be privately funded rather than by the federal government. I'm a proponent of down sizing federal government with the state having the larger say so by each state how they are governed. It was the intention of our founding fathers to be that way. States need to take a bolder stance on this imo

According to the article, they mostly are.

Never in history has fine art been able to support itself financially; it's always had large, wealthy, often institutional, patrons. In the past, when it was the monarchy or the church with all the money and power, they were the ones to foot the bill. These days, it's more corporations, secular government, and wealthy individuals.

I'm just grateful Ron isn't going to be the republican nominee for president in November. He could have possibly beaten President Biden in the upcoming election. Maybe Ron is planning to use this money to subsidize flood insurance companies to come back to insure homes in Florida. They have serious issues down there in gator land. FEMA recently overhauled flood insurance rates and eliminated some discounts, thus raising flood insurance rates for many people. If they can find flood insurance at all in Florida.

Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other

Amen to you for bringing in the facts. Ron DeSantis sounds like a border-line fascist.

This was at state level not the federal level. Desantis would not have line item veto powers for the federal budget even were he president.

Thanks.

He may not be a fascist, but stuff like this really does give me pause to question if he is.

It just seems like he is trying his best to rid the state of liberals and Democrats. Why not just close the colleges and universities?

You are welcome. Well, Democrats have their own issues, but DeSantis is worse. The centrists can not stand DeSantis either.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says he vetoed $32m in arts funding because of Entartete Kunst

The veto also cut more than $700,000 in funding to Jewish community centers, according to local reports

DeSantis vetoed the funding earlier this month, Axios Miami reports. The staunch Republican cited “sexual” festivals as the reason for the cuts at a Thursday press conference.

“You have your tax dollars being given in grants to things like the Fringe Festival, which is like a sexual festival where they’re doing all this stuff,” DeSantis said.

State Representative Anna Eskamani, a Democrat, said the festival isn’t sexual, and suggested another reason the governor pulled the funding.

“It does feature drag queens and other forms of artistic expression that DeSantis has wanted to censor despite courts telling him otherwise,” she told The Miami-Herald.

Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that Florida cannot enforce a law that would limit drag shows.

DeSantis’ press secretary responded to The Independent’s request for comment by sending a link to the Orlando Fringe Festival’s programming, and to a tweet from the governor’s communications director, Bryan Griffin, who shared the ad of a show titled, ”Captain Havoc and the Big-[Breasty] Bog Witches.” [the event is 18+]

The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center lost more than $70,000, while the state’s Holocaust Memorial Committee lost $47,000, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Jewish community centers throughout the state are losing more than $700,000 combined.
