Hi Blair,
I hope I can help.
Suicide is a very frightening thing to discuss. I find most people avoid the subject at all cost.
I believe Satan takes a Godly desire (to be present with the Lord) --
PHP 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
He then uses this desire to try to destroy you--
MT 4:5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written:
" `He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.' "
MT 4:7 Jesus answered him, "It is also written: `Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' "
I have never heard anyone say this, but I believe that Satan was trying to get Jesus to kill himself.
The desire to be absent from the body and present with the Lord is a Godly desire.
Suicide is a temptation of Satan. It is very important that you see this destinction, and as Jesus said "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
You must be strong in the Lord and make the decision to live no matter how strong your desire to be with the Lord might be. You are sharing in Christ's sufferings. I believe you are being tempted with the same temptation that Christ endured--what an honor.
RO 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Christ knew to use the Word against Satan. If you notice, he always answered Satan with a bible quote. You are going to have to learn to protect yourself by learning spiritual warfare.
HEB 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
EPH 6:13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
I try to always have a bible quote going in my mind--"take captive every thought".
2CO 10:3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
As you come to bring every thought into captivity your joy will increase greatly--and yes, you can want to die (be present with the Lord) and still have great joy.
I am constantly quoting a bible verse in my mind and the more I am able to do this, the greater my joy. Let me warn you it is not easy at first. You will be quoting the bible to yourself and then all of these other thoughts will come into you mind. But, persevere--it gets easier and easier as time goes on.
COL 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Just think Blair how you would feel if you had a child you loved dearly. You took care of this child in every way possible--he didn't have a worry in the world. You would always take care of him. But, he didn't believe you. You knew how much you loved him and you knew you would take care of him--but he didn't believe it. Think how that would hurt you.
Blair, trust God in life as well as death.
Please let me know Blair if there is anything I can do to help you in any way.
Love you in the Lord
Terri
