• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I took my daughter to the doc a few days ago and I suggested the doc give her an anxiety test. Well she got a depression evaluation to fill out and she said later she felt like she was depressed. Now we're waiting for the doc to call us back about the evaluation. I read the depression meds change your brain chemistry and stabilizes a person's moods. She is starting a new school next week.

So what med/ nutritional help helps you all?

I took Lexapro off and on for a couple of years and it helped me greatly. I weaned myself off of it about six months ago and started taking a nutritional supplement call SAMe. I'm not sure I need it, but it can't hurt and I can't afford to crash again and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

While on the Lexapro I didn't have any side effects. I've often wondered if this was because I keep my diet very clean. It's important to stay away from sugar, caffeine and refined foods and chemical preservatives. Also, artificial sweeteners have been shown to disturb brain chemistry, so these should be avoided. Stevia, raw honey, and agave are not a problem for when sweets are desired.

The basic nutriton needed is a good clean diet, free of what's listed above and full of whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, beans, chicken, turkey, and fish. a good multi vitamin and a good dose of fish oil are also helpful. The interesting thing about this sort of diet is that many of these foods have elements in them that promote higher seratonin levels.

Prayers for you and your daughter. Let me know if you want more nutrition info.

Blessings,
A

Good nutrition is important, I agree with the other poster. There are quite a few medications for depression, and sometimes the doctor will combine two. That all depends upon your daughter, her age, the doctor and how long she's been depressed and how deeply depressed she is.

She may "only" need a counselor she can trust with whom to talk. An outside the family source, a confidant, gives her a chance to air her thoughts and find out that she's not crazy or weird, in a trusting environment. A professional can also identify any cognitive distortions that might be causing her depression.

(Don't read me wrong here... it's not "all in her head". No matter how the depression began, correcting the habit of negative thinking that keeps one there is very much in one's control, once they learn to identify what they are doing. Correcting thinking improves how one feels because it changes the brain chemicals as well.)

Good for you to get her help!
